As a seasoned movie connoisseur with over three decades of horror flicks under my belt, I can confidently say that this year has been nothing short of a bloodbath for our collective sanity, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it! The upcoming release of “Oddity” is just the latest addition to an already stacked roster of spine-tingling masterpieces.
Next week, one of the most terrifying horror films of the year will arrive on your streaming platform for a chilling viewing experience this upcoming spooky season. Entitled, this spine-tingling movie revolves around a vengeful psychic who employs cursed artifacts to trace her twin sister’s murderer. The film generated buzz when it debuted at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in March, taking home the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival Audience Award in the Midnighter category. This dark tale has left audiences and critics intrigued so far, and if you’re daring enough, it might leave you spellbound this Halloween!
Directed by Damian Mc Carthy, the chilling film titled “Oddity ” showcases performances by Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, Caroline Menton, Steve Wall, and Jonathan French. For a glimpse into its spine-tingling plot, take a look at the official synopsis of this horror adventure provided below.
As a movie buff, I find myself immersed in a chilling tale: me and my spouse, Ted, are in the midst of refurbishing a secluded countryside manor when an unspeakable tragedy strikes – my partner, Dani, is brutally slain. The finger points at a patient from our local asylum, where Ted practices medicine. But alas, just after this heinous crime, the suspected killer meets his own untimely demise.
About a year since the incident, Dani’s visually impaired twin sibling, Darcy – who claims to have psychic abilities and an affinity for cursed objects – suddenly shows up uninvited at Ted’s place, along with his current partner Yana. Darcy suspects that there was more to her sister’s murder than what has been publicly revealed, so she came armed with some of the most perilous items from her cursed collection in an attempt to seek retribution.
This Year Has Been Killer for Horror Fans
The film “Oddity” was warmly received by critics when it debuted, and is currently “Certified Fresh” with a near-flawless rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, a popular review aggregator. MovieWeb’s critic, Will Sayre, showered the movie with compliments and appreciated that the narrative kept him guessing at every unexpected twist.
“This story presents the exceptional skills of Irish actress Carolyn Bracken (known for The Quiet Girl, which was nominated for an Oscar). She portrays twin sisters; one sister experiences an untimely end, setting off a thrilling horror-thriller adventure that will captivate fans.
Collider’s Chase Hutchinson, on the other hand, praised Oddity by saying it was both genuinely terrifying and darkly amusing. He also described the film as an intense supernatural horror that will leave you shredded.
Maintaining a keen understanding of its genre to cleverly satirize it while still delivering genuine terror in a timeless fashion, this movie becomes more appealing over time. When the plot unexpectedly takes a turn, you deeply experience each moment of the descent.
2024 has proved to be a chilling year for horror movie enthusiasts, as they’ve been treated to an array of critically praised and genuinely terrifying offerings. So far in this year, viewers have been gripped by fear while watching the likes of Late Night with the Devil, the serial killer thriller Strange Darling, the pop culture sensation Longlegs (starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage), the body horror tale The Substance, the apocalyptic prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, and Speak No Evil, which features James McAvoy as a chilling antagonist. The year’s not finished yet, with more horror treats on the way, including the action horror movie Azrael (Sept. 27), the gory sequel Terrifier 3 (Oct. 11), the sinister follow-up Smile 2 (Oct. 18), Heretic (starring Hugh Grant) on Nov. 8, and director Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu (Dec. 25).
