Greetings! You’ve entered Off The AppStore, a weekly highlight with an intriguing twist. Specifically, it showcases games that you can enjoy on your mobile device, but these games function beyond the boundaries of the common platforms – Google Play Store and Apple AppStore.
*In other words, you may need to put some effort into downloading different app markets or APK files, or you can just play the games directly in your phone’s browser. Regardless, we will explain this for each game. Continue reading to discover a new game or an exciting experience that’s not typically found on standard app stores.*
Mobile devices are remarkable for accomplishing much with minimal resources, and some users impressively manipulate them as skillfully as a maestro directing an orchestra. Yet, for those who navigate at a more leisurely pace and prefer using just one or two fingers, there’s an abundance of applications designed to cater to their needs. Given our growing screen time, it’s comforting when we can add something straightforward yet swift and engaging onto our devices. Alice aims to provide this experience by offering us the opportunity to enjoy DeadEye.
In this 2D pixel-art game, we find ourselves in the “Last Stand” genre – a niche I’ve grown fond of. Unlike the classic vampire survival games, these stories revolve around eccentric characters who barricade themselves in small locations, using whatever resources they have to fend off enemies gradually closing in. This time, our protagonist is Douglas, a brooding cat with a trench coat and a pistol, surrounded by an array of monstrous foes armed with bullets that can just as easily annihilate the undead as the living.
Positioned strategically, Douglas maintains a comprehensive vantage point of his environment, ready to engage targets once they appear within his sight, provided he has bullets available. His bullet supply, health, and DeadEye meter are crucial factors to manage effectively. The DeadEye meter enables him to arrange multiple shots simultaneously with the hope of eliminating several targets at once.
In terms of progression, Douglas will accumulate experience points that lead to leveling up, unlocking new skills and even obtaining special artifacts for additional active and passive advantages. The adversaries will persistently approach, introducing more diverse enemy types such as elite and boss versions, to offer substantial rewards upon defeat and secure their own survival.
In DeadEye, you don’t need to worry about navigation or exploration as the monsters approach you. The gameplay is focused on aiming and shooting, which might seem simple but it’s surprisingly challenging. As the difficulty increases rapidly, you’ll find yourself striving to improve in order to unlock new characters, game modes, and even anticipate the multiplayer option. One thing’s for sure, your eyes won’t be “dead” while playing DeadEye!
You can play DeadEye on its itch.io page!
