Welcome to Off The Beaten Path, our weekly feature with a unique twist. In essence, these games – similar to those we regularly showcase here – can be played on your mobile device, but they function beyond the usual avenues of the two main distribution platforms: Google Play Store and Apple AppStore.
In other words, you may need to put some effort into downloading different AppStores or APKs, or just play the games directly in your phone’s browser. However, we will provide detailed instructions for each game. Keep reading to discover a fresh game or adventure that lies beyond the traditional AppStore!
Nostalgia, a potent reminder, often makes us question if life could be as simple as it once was. Progress is meant to simplify our lives, but it seems to complicate many other aspects instead. However, designers have demonstrated time and again that complexity isn’t necessary for greatness. In fact, the beauty of old movies or objects endures because they don’t rely on high-tech gadgets or the latest updates to captivate us. That’s why we continue to find joy in them, and why JohnnyBot managed to create something fresh yet comfortingly familiar with Argon Dream.
In simpler terms, Argon Dream harks back to the classic gaming era of Atari, where controllers had limited buttons and games were straightforward yet engaging. Just like syrup flowing smoothly through a pancake canyon, these games are easy to grasp. Argon Dream’s title game, Breakout, exemplifies this simplicity – you have a ball, a paddle, and blocks to clear by bouncing the ball off the paddle and breaking the blocks. It’s all about reacting intuitively as the ball bounces and breaks while keeping it in play.
Instead of simply mimicking other games, Argon Dream strives to stand out by tapping into innate abilities we all exhibit when presented with a ball and fragile items. The game design is reminiscent of Tetris, featuring diverse-colored blocks arranged in lines, shapes, and patterns that require careful disassembly. Maintaining control of the ball as it accelerates and approaches at unexpected angles has always been tricky, but now there are additional challenges. Different types of blocks with unique properties come into play, influencing the ball’s behavior in various manners. Additionally, you’ll encounter opportunities to acquire power-ups that boost your abilities or face penalties for using aggressive ones.
With Argon Dream, you can step back into the world of classic games, yet experience something fresh and innovative. It’s a game reminiscent of Breakout, but boasts a vintage aesthetic, Game Boy-style controls (with an optional analog stick), and additional features to cater to both seasoned players and new ones. We aim to breathe new life into the old!
You can try out Argon Dream on its itch.io page!
