OG Moana Star Auli'i Cravalho Weighs In On The Live-Action Remake’s Lead Actress And Shares Her Hopes For The Movie

As a longtime Disney enthusiast and avid gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Moana.” It’s hard to believe that it has been almost seven years since the animated film graced our screens with its beautiful storytelling, unforgettable music, and stunning animation.

It’s hard to believe that “Moana” was released in 2016, it seems like only yesterday we were all singing “How Far I’ll Go” non-stop. Disney fans were excited when they announced “Moana 2” would hit theaters towards the end of 2024. But the news got even better with the announcement that “Moana” would be among the Disney classics getting a live-action makeover. Given what we’ve learned about the upcoming live-action “Moana” and Auli’i Cravalho‘s thoughts on the actress taking her place, I’m definitely on board with this decision.

In the animated film “Moana,” Auli’i Cravalho provided the voice for the title character. However, when the story was brought to life on the big screen through live-action, a new actress named Catherine Laga’aia stepped in to portray the Pacific Island princess. This marks Laga’aia’s first major role in film.

In an interview with People, the actress from “Mean Girls” expressed her backing and enthusiasm for the 17-year-old actress who will be stepping into the role, despite some fans’ potential disappointment.

As someone who has seen the resilience and grace of women of color in various aspects of life, I am truly captivated by her beauty and youth. Her presence is a testament to the strength and courage that comes with overcoming adversities.

I support the choice to bring in a new actress for this role, not that I don’t admire Auli’i Cravalho’s talent as an actress and singer (I went to see “Mean Girls” solely to witness her and Reneé Rapp’s brilliant portrayals of Janice and Regina). However, when it comes to live-action adaptations, I believe that the age of the actor or actress should align with the character’s age in the story. Cravalho is now 23 years old, whereas she was only 16 when “Moana” was released. The actress has stated that Moana being a teenager is crucial to the film’s plot.

In a live-action movie, I prefer the actress to portray a convincing 16-year-old character full of energy and determination, fighting to protect her island community from a human-induced crisis.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting news as a devoted fan! Don’t worry, Cravalho will continue to bring Moana’s voice and singing to life in the next animated film and step into a producer role for the live-action project. On the other hand, Johnson will once again embody the complex character of Maui, who is both vain and kind-hearted, in both upcoming films – just two of many projects The Rock has planned. The enchantment of the original Moana won’t disappear without Lin-Manuel Miranda as songwriter; instead, Hamilton director Thomas Kail has joined the live-action adaptation.

The “All Together Now” actress is thrilled about Laga’aia’s ability to capture the enchanting essence of the original Oscar-nominated film. She expressed her excitement to witness the young actress bring the island princess to life in this significant “pan-Polynesian tale,” which unfortunately sees limited Pacific Island representation in Hollywood. According to the “How Far I’ll Go” singer, this is a crucial element for a successful remake of “Moana.”

If we keep our focus on the development of this charming young woman, I believe everyone will share in the excitement.

Regarding the next installment of “Moana,” animated film sequel number 2, The Power’s actress shared an update. In this continuation, Moana will be three years older, at age 19. Fans can anticipate a new adventure for her, distinct from the initial storyline. Yet, it will remain connected to the original plot.

As a dedicated fan of Disney animations, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming release of “Moana 2” later this year. With my Disney+ subscription, I plan to rewatch the first movie before the sequel hits theaters on November 27. The enchanting songs and captivating storyline never fail to leave me in awe, making it an absolute pleasure to revisit. Plus, having Auli’i Cravalho returning to her iconic role is an added bonus!
