As a theatre enthusiast with a soft spot for unconventional stories and bold performances, I can’t help but be absolutely smitten by Cole Escola’s masterpiece, “Oh, Mary!” The fact that it has not only broken its own box office records but also managed to attract some of Hollywood’s biggest names is just the icing on the cake.
Oh,Mary! has recouped its $4.525 million Broadway capitalization.
The Cole Escola-penned and acted play, which debuted at the Lyceum Theatre on July 11, has now covered its Broadway production expenses. This show has shattered its own box office record a total of nine times, with last week’s earnings exceeding $1.2 million, boasting an average ticket price of $171.32.
In “Oh Mary!”, Escola portrays Mary Todd Lincoln as a longing cabaret performer, expressing discontent towards her life within the White House and defying the desires of her spouse, President Abraham Lincoln.
Besides shattering box office records, this comedy has also attracted high-profile guests, such as Michelle Obama, a former first lady, Valerie Jarrett, and several celebrities like Billy Crystal, Tom Hanks, Bowen Yang, Anne Hathaway, Andrew Garfield, Jennifer Aniston, Madonna. Additionally, during its Off-Broadway run, it was graced by the presence of Steven Spielberg, Sally Field, and Tony Kushner.
In 2009, it was in that year that Escola conceived the concept for the play. The foundation was built upon the question: “What if Abe’s assassination wasn’t detrimental to Mary Todd Lincoln?” However, Escola, who delved sparingly into Lincoln’s life, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the character is more a reflection of their personal experiences, rather than those of the former first lady.
Escola shared that she’s had a lifelong passion for theater, but felt excluded due to perceived lack of formal training or appropriate experiences. To overcome this barrier, she established a platform that granted her access to the world of theater.
The series additionally features Conrad Ricamora playing the role of Mary’s spouse, James Scully as her teacher, Bianca Leigh as her chaperone, and Tony Macht as the assistant to Mary’s husband.
The performance moved to Broadway following its successful and fully booked stint at the Lucille Lortel Theatre off-Broadway. Originally slated for a 12-week duration, it has now been prolonged and will continue until January 19th.
2024-25 season’s initial performance has declared its aim for profit recovery, even though it happened to be the very first commercial play to debut during this particular season.
Oh, Mary! is being staged on Broadway by the team consisting of Kevin McCollum and Lucas McMahon, along with Mike Lavoie and Carlee Briglia.
