I, Omar Sy, am thrilled to be taking the lead role in the upcoming Netflix TV series, Extraction, as reported by Variety. This show will be set within the expansive universe of Extraction, inspired by the acclaimed films starring Chris Hemsworth. In addition, I can be seen in another Netflix production, Lupin.
The streamer has already released the plot of the series:
In the fast-paced setting of ‘Extraction,’ this action-packed drama follows a mercenary, or freelance soldier (Sy), through a perilous operation to save hostages in Libya. Caught amidst warring groups and remorseless assassins, the narrative explores the internal battles of complex and imperfect characters, all grappling with pain, deception, and decisions that could mean life or death.
The upcoming TV series is to be overseen by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are known for their work on “Avengers,” together with Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi. Sam Hargrave, director of the “Extraction” movies, will also be a producer. Interestingly, Joe penned the scripts for these films, which were adapted from the graphic novel “Ciudad,” written by Ande Parks. Lastly, Glen Mazzara, who has previously worked on “The Walking Dead,” will serve as both an executive producer and the showrunner.
Mazzara was thrilled with the choice of Sy for the cast and his position as showrunner off-screen.
I feel incredibly fortunate. Omar is an extraordinary talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have graciously accepted me into the AGBO family. I must say, the team at Netflix is simply outstanding – I couldn’t ask for better colleagues. Indeed, it’s a stroke of luck to be working with them.
The initial announcement about a TV series spinoff of Extraction was made in December 2023, and with Sy taking on the main role, it seems like production could start quite quickly. Although it might seem unlikely for it to premiere on Netflix later this year, a release date in 2026 appears more plausible. Keep an eye out for further casting updates in the upcoming weeks.
There Will Be an ‘Extraction 3’ With Hemsworth Returning
Discussions about a third Extraction movie have been ongoing ever since the second installment premiered in the summer of 2023, which became one of Netflix’s most-watched films. In October 2024, it was announced by the Russo Brothers that the production of Extraction 3 had made significant progress, with Sam Hargrave set to direct once again. It is anticipated that Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Tyler Rake in the upcoming film, although specific plot details remain undisclosed for now. However, given the Russo Brothers’ and Hargrave’s past track record, fans can look forward to more groundbreaking action sequences.
While at the New York Comic Con, Joe gave fans an idea of what was happening:
Currently, we’re deeply engrossed in developing that tale. We’re putting a lot of effort into it. Our aim is to commence filming it next year. Without a doubt, it will be filmed next year. I’m deliberately vague about the details because it adds an element of excitement.
In 2020, Extraction made its entrance and presented a movie that earned a 67% critical approval and 71% audience satisfaction on Rotten Tomatoes. Three years on, Extraction 2 hit Netflix screens and was even more successful than the original in many aspects, often surpassing it. This is not common among action movies, but both critics and viewers seemed to enjoy it. The sequel boasts an impressive 80% critical approval and 85% positive feedback on RT. If production for a third film manages to take place this year, we might expect its release on Netflix in 2026.
