One Big Reason We're Probably Never Going To See Twisters' Now-Infamous Kiss Scene, And Why I'm OK With It

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has weathered countless cinematic storms, I must say that the recent commotion surrounding the cut kiss between Tyler and Kate in Twisters seems to be just another tempest in a teapot. The fact that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has confirmed that we will not see this romantic moment on the home video release is perfectly fine by me.

People are still making a scene about a moment cut from Twisters, one of the unquestionable successes of the 2024 movie schedule. So one would think that sort of outcry would push for the now-infamous Tyler/Kate kiss that Steven Spielberg suggested be cut to be released. Well, there’s a pretty big reason why we’re probably never going to see Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ romantic moment for ourselves. Which, if we’re going to open this subject again, is a-ok with me.

Twisters’ Home Video Release Will Not Include Tyler And Kate’s Kiss

As a lifelong fan of classic films, I must say that the recent news about the availability of “Twister” for rental or purchase through digital film retailers has filled me with immense joy and nostalgia. Growing up in the 90s, this movie was a staple of my childhood, providing countless hours of entertainment for my friends and me. The thrill of watching the storm chasers navigate the treacherous tornadoes and the emotional depth of the characters’ relationships were unparalleled in any other film I had seen at the time.

Starting August 13, 2024, Twisters enthusiasts will have the opportunity to purchase or rent the movie digitally for the first time through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s premium digital release. This special edition comes with exclusive content such as a previously unseen gag reel and some deleted scenes. However, it is important to note that there won’t be an alternative take of the film’s final scene where characters Tyler (Glen Powell) and Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) share a kiss.

Fans were expecting more content from the movie, but it seems unlikely that this will be included when the physical copy is released. The statement suggests only “additional featurettes,” which typically include behind-the-scenes footage, but there’s no hint of an expanded cut like what you might see on a re-release.

As a longtime fan of epic disaster movies, I must admit that I was initially disappointed when I learned that the original version of “Twister” didn’t include an alternate ending on its home release. Growing up in Oklahoma, where tornadoes are a regular part of life, I have always been captivated by the power and destruction these natural phenomena can bring.

Movie Review: A Sizzling, Smoky, Thrilling Experience with Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Twisters

I haven’t joined the Gen Z audience who favor platonic relationships in films. Instead, I believe that Tyler and Kate’s bond doesn’t have to lead to romance. After all, Kate has only recently moved past the tragic loss of her boyfriend, Jeb (Daryl McCormack), which forced her to abandon storm chasing for five years due to the immense trauma it caused her!

If we’re willing to view Bill Paxton as the real antagonist in the movie “Twister”, then it’s worth considering that romantic connections forged amidst intense weather depictions should also face similar scrutiny. However, since “Twister” is still earning a consistent income, discussions about a sequel might be happening right now. This could mean exploring the couple’s story further in another installment, taking them through more storms and romance.

In each potential sequel, it could be intriguing to switch teams of storm chasers instead of sticking with the same ones. After all, nature is the main antagonist in these movies, and not every horror movie villain repeatedly targets the same victims. Much like how viewers don’t necessarily require Kate and Tyler to share a romantic moment like pandas at a zoo, the original Twister film demonstrated that we don’t need established characters for an enjoyable experience.

While it pains me to say this, it seems that Tyler and Kate’s kiss might find its place alongside the unused ending of ‘The Shining’, a spot far from what we normally see on screen. Yes, there are clips of them filming it online, but those moments were not intended for the final cut of the movie.

Instead of letting it dampen your enjoyment of good times, continue your excitement by either renting or purchasing director Lee Isaac Chung’s continuation of the Twister franchise digitally. Or if you’re in search of an adrenaline rush, grab your tickets now for the limited one-week 4DX return of Twisters starting on August 30th!
