As a long-time fan of the One Chicago universe, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming crossover event! The last time we had one was back in 2019, and it feels like an eternity since we’ve seen our favorite characters from Firehouse 51, the Intelligence Unit, and Med team up.
As a dedicated fan of NBC’s One Chicago shows, it’s been over five years since we last saw a crossover event where the heroes of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med united to tackle a city-wide crisis. Now, the wait is finally over as another epic crossover has been announced for the 2025 TV schedule, and this time it’s going to be especially perilous for two characters. This news brought back memories of what Marina Squerciati from Chicago P.D. shared with me earlier this fall, sparking an exciting idea in my mind…
First things first, though!
One Chicago’s 2025 Crossover Event
Fans who have been eagerly waiting for new episodes of “Fire,” “P.D.,” and “Med” after they aired their fall finales in November can now rejoice! As re-watching through a Peacock subscription is currently the only way to catch up until winter premieres, Wolf Entertainment has provided some exciting news: The crossover event will air on NBC on Wednesday, January 29. However, viewers should note that the schedule for this special night won’t follow the usual format.
On tonight’s triple-bill, “Chicago Fire” kicks off at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, with “Chicago Med” airing next at 9 p.m. ET and “Chicago P.D.” wrapping up the night at 10 p.m. ET. Notably, among these three shows, only “Chicago P.D.”, currently in its twelfth season, has maintained its regular time slot. After the crossover event, they are expected to resume their usual broadcasting times.
How might One Chicago outdo its cinematic “Infection” event? In this new instance, an intense gas explosion in one of the Windy City’s skyscrapers will trigger the usual heroic first responders to act swiftly and save numerous civilians. However, this won’t be enough for a complete three-part series. The storyline will deepen when a crisis unfolds beneath the ground, leading to a desperate attempt to rescue forty individuals trapped underground, among whom are two team members themselves.
Indeed, the account of the crossover didn’t disclose the specific individuals among the characters whose lives might be at risk during the incident. Similarly, Anastasia Puglisi, a co-executive producer for One Chicago and EVP at Wolf Entertainment, refrained from naming these potentially endangered characters when she made her statement.
Assembling essentially a three-hour action flick is an extremely challenging feat that demands seamless collaboration among our writers, actors, crews, and producers, as well as assistance from the city of Chicago. We’re excited to have top-tier talent across all departments to tackle this challenge, strengthen the One Chicago brand, and offer our audience an exclusive and engaging viewing experience.
In the past, I’ve noticed that One Chicago excels at making the Fire and Med segments of a three-part story feel more smoothly connected compared to the Chicago P.D. segment, which typically holds its 10 PM ET slot. However, this doesn’t imply that the crossovers were disappointing. The P.D. episode “Infection” from 2019 also stands out in my memory, and it reminded me of a more recent conversation I had with Marina Squerciati about another actor she wishes to collaborate with further. I would be enthusiastic about seeing their characters face danger together based on her sentiments.
Marina Squerciati’s Season 12 Comments
In other words, I’m imagining a scenario where these two characters, Kim Burgess (played by Marina Squerciati) and Kiana Cook (played by Toya Turner), will find themselves in danger together during the crossover. However, it’s important to note that no major Chicago series regulars are expected to meet permanent harm or suffer lasting damage from this event. This shared peril could potentially bring these characters closer and prompt them to collaborate through their ordeal.
Earlier this year, I had a conversation with Marina Squerciati regarding Burgess’ pursuit of promotion and eventually becoming a detective. Patrick John Flueger shares his perspective on this matter from Ruzek’s point of view. As someone who’s always been eager to see character arcs for Burgess and Upton intertwined (and both Squerciati and Tracy Spiridakos expressing the same interest), I found myself reflecting on the potential of P.D. female characters appearing together in a storyline.
In Season 12, I inquired about Kiana Cook’s desired dynamic between her characters, and the actress from ‘Burgess’ responded by revealing:
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the relationships within my favorite show. It was disappointing not to see Tracy’s character and mine develop further; even at the season finale, we never had a proper goodbye. The same could be said for Ruzek and Atwater. There’s always been this unfulfilled potential between Toya and me that I wish we could explore more deeply. I believe we deserve a chance to grow together, just like Upton and I did.
In a November interview, Marina Squerciati may not have been referring to “Burgess and Cook having a romantic relationship underground in danger” when she mentioned any connection between them. However, the idea of these characters from different shows interacting is quite intriguing, especially for fans like me! The veteran P.D. actress also praised Toya Turner, the latest addition to the cast, as a new series regular on the show.
She’s simply outstanding. There’s no denying it. When others enter that workspace, it can be overwhelming. We’ve been here for twelve years, after all. We’ve established a rhythm, a method to our work that feels like a dance. The first time she joined us, her dialogue was impressive, and she executed it flawlessly. She’s an excellent fit, and we’re thrilled to welcome her into our team.
Squerciati’s ringing endorsement of Toya Turner as a new co-star definitely tracks with what Turner told me about how welcoming the Chicago P.D. cast was to her, up to LaRoyce Hawkins helping her pick out a couch. I spoke with her just one day after getting Squerciati’s thoughts on Burgess and Cook, and she shared her own thoughts on the subject:
Absolutely on board with the idea! It turns out someone has already given us a team name: Team Kiki. So, when I heard it, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Let’s get moving!” [laughs] I’m really excited about this. We’ve had some interactions that will be featured in upcoming episodes. I can’t wait for more of those encounters for sure.
As a gamer, am I going to catch any One Chicago crossover episodes hinted by Toya Turner as part of the “future episodes” for Team Kiki? I can’t wait to find out when they air in late January! Even if Burgess and Cook don’t team up in this three-part series, I’m glad to see that both actresses are open to collaborating more in the future. It gives me hope for some exciting crossover adventures down the line!
At the moment, there’s an exciting event coming up: One Chicago’s first crossover since 2019 is scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, on NBC. If you’d prefer to reminisce about previous crossovers during your winter break, consider streaming Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med on Peacock. The winter premieres for all three shows will air on January 8.
