On Thursday, Harry Styles, Niall Horon, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik issued a collective statement, expressing their grief over the sad demise of their ex-bandmate Payne, who passed away at 31 years old.
We’re utterly heartbroken by the sad news about Liam. As we all gather ourselves, there will be more to express later on. For now, we want to grieve and come to terms with the loss of our cherished brother. The moments we spent with him are memories that we’ll keep forever. At this moment, our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the fans who adored him along with us. We will deeply miss him. Rest in peace, Liam.
The statement was signed “Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry.”
On a different platform of his personal social media, Tomlinson referred to Payne as “my buddy, one of my closest friends, almost like a brother.
During a heartfelt eulogy, the musician expressed profound sorrow, stating he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of his fellow band member. He praised him as an exceptional lyricist with a keen ear for harmony, and mentioned their frequent discussions about reuniting in the recording studio to attempt rekindling the songwriting magic they had cultivated within the group.

He continued, “Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam,” then adding, “I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye. I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life. I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn’t to be.”
Tomlinson ended with a message to Payne’s son, Bear: “I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was. I wish I got chance to say goodbye and tell you one more time how much I loved you.”
In 2010, during his individual stint on the British talent show X-Factor, Liam Payne was part of the group selected to create the boy band that would eventually become One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. In a heart-wrenching turn of events, I found myself in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where my life took an unexpected twist. On Wednesday, after a fateful fall from the balcony at Casa Sur Hotel, I sustained injuries so severe that they ultimately led to my untimely demise. Medical professionals confirmed my passing at the scene. Later, the Buenos Aires Security Ministry shared with The Associated Press that authorities had responded to an emergency call reporting an agitated man possibly under the influence of substances.
Approximately at midnight, the doctors announced that Liam Payne’s cause of death was due to severe trauma, both internal and external bleeding, as stated in a communication sent to The Hollywood Reporter by Argentina’s 14th National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office.
According to a statement from the prosecutor’s office, Payne appeared to have an episode related to substance abuse. As a standard procedure, they will investigate his death as a “questionable death” because he seemed to be alone at the time of the fall, even though the exact circumstances surrounding his demise remain under investigation.
Just before his passing, Payne was captured on camera and video during Horan’s performance in South America.
According to the BBC report, Payne’s family issued a statement, expressing their deep sorrow. Relatives such as his mother Karen and father Geoff spoke up, saying, “Our hearts are shattered.” They continued, “Liam will always be cherished in our memories, remembered for his compassionate, humorous, and courageous spirit. At this difficult time, we are leaning on each other for support within our family, and we kindly request privacy and understanding as we grieve.
