As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book-inspired gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel excited about the potential return of Batgirl to the silver screen. The enigmatic and visually striking style of Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn has long intrigued me, particularly in his work on the Pusher trilogy and Drive. His unique blend of action, drama, and genre-bending storytelling would undoubtedly bring a fresh perspective to Barbara Gordon’s journey, breathing new life into the character that I’ve grown to love over the years.
The superhero genre continues to be wildly popular, and with the DCEU at an end (and streaming with a Max subscription), all eyes are on what CEO James Gunn has in store for the new DC Universe. The first slate of projects is titled Gods and Monsters, and there are countless questions about upcoming DC movies. One Director just revived his Interest in directing a Batgirl movie, and I think he’d be a great fit for James Gunn’s DCU.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but share my excitement about the potential appearance of Batgirl in the growing DC Universe. Back in 2016, Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn expressed his desire to direct a Batgirl movie, stating, “You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl.” Recently, when asked about this possibility by The Hollywood Reporter, he didn’t shy away from expressing his interest once more. This leaves us fans eagerly waiting to see if our beloved character will finally get her moment in the spotlight.
It can be intriguing to discuss hypothetical projects like remaking Logan’s Run or Barbarella, yet the actual creation of these projects might not be as enjoyable. I’ve met with various people about such ideas, but they never fully materialized into reality. The allure of potential possibilities is often more captivating than the realities, but perhaps that’s because I haven’t found a project worthy enough to truly define me. However, if an opportunity for Batwoman or Batgirl comes along, I’d certainly consider it.
Refn, it seems, is open to working on a Batgirl film, despite acknowledging the challenges of adapting pre-existing intellectual properties. We can only speculate about James Gunn’s plans for the character and whether Refn might be involved in them. Time will tell!
In my opinion, Nicolas Winding Refn would make an outstanding director for a live-action Batgirl film. With his extensive background in genre storytelling and franchise development, highlighted by the Pusher trilogy (one of Mads Mikkelsen’s finest performances) and critically acclaimed projects such as Drive, it seems fitting to have him bring his talents to Gotham City alongside Barbara Gordon.
During the same conversation with THR, Refn further shared his insights about the film industry and his capacity for making movies he’s deeply invested in, expressing it this way: “Later on in our chat, Refn expanded on his thoughts regarding the movie business and his knack for producing films that truly matter to him.”
I have a soft spot for Hollywood, its mechanisms, its flair, and the symbolism it embodies, along with the thrill that surrounds it. For now, I cherish my independence more, as the ability to pursue my desires freely each day brings me great joy and is incredibly important to me.
Points were made. So if a Batgirl movie falls onto his lap, it sounds like he might not be involved for a full franchise or trilogy of films. Of course, there’s no guarantee that James Gunn is approaching him with this type of offer… even if he’d absolutely hit it out of the park.
Indeed, many fans are still grieving over the scrapped Leslie Grace film titled Batgirl, which was fully produced before Warner Bros. decided to cancel it for a rumored tax reduction. Whether this project will surface in the future remains uncertain, despite boasting an impressive cast including J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser as Firefly, and Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman.
The DCU will begin with James Gunn’s Superman movie. For now, check the 2025 movie release dates.
