One Marvel Fan "Proves" Thunderbolts* Answers a 7 Year Old MCU Mystery

As a movie buff with over three decades of comic book-inspired cinema under my belt, I must say that the upcoming Marvel Studios release, Thunderbolts*, has me both excited and intrigued. The trailer’s revelation about Avengers Tower rekindles memories of when Tony Stark first sold it back in 2017, sparking endless speculation among fans about its new owner. Now, with the confirmation from the footage at San Diego Comic-Con, we finally have an answer – or so it seems.

The trailer for Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts has been released, catching the attention of fans who have pointed out that this movie appears to be addressing a question about Marvel that has been unanswered since 2017. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, it became known that Tony Stark had sold Avengers Tower, as the team was now operating from their new facility in upstate New York, which was introduced at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Since then, fans have pondered who bought Avengers Tower, with theories ranging from the Kingpin to the MCU’s Norman Osborn and even speculation about a potential new home for Marvel’s Fantastic Four prior to the confirmation that Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in an alternate universe.

User BJET notes that the trailers for Thunderbolts seem to suggest that the Avengers Tower will be featured in the movie. The scene shows the team facing off against Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) inside the tower, with a skyline resembling the southeast view from the MetLife Building, where the Avengers Tower once stood. Previously, it was reported that Thunderbolts would feature the former superhero building, based on audience feedback at Marvel’s Hall H panel in 2024’s San Diego Comic-Con, as we detailed earlier. Now that the footage is available for all to see, more people can confirm this information. You can find BJET’s original post below:

In the year 2025, Marvel Studios plans to shed light on long-standing fan queries, particularly those related to Tiamut’s protruding remains in the Indian Ocean, a mystery that has puzzled fans since the release of Eternals in 2021. Moreover, the film Captain America: Brave New World will mark Tim Blake Nelson’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as The Leader, a character first hinted at in The Incredible Hulk back in 2008. With the confirmation of Avengers Tower through Thunderbolts*, it can be assumed that while answers might take time to come, eventually, all secrets will be unveiled.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it appears that Avengers Tower has a new owner in Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, also known as Val. However, the true purpose of her acquisition remains a mystery. Fans initially speculated that the Thunderbolts team would be based at the tower, but the trailer suggests otherwise – the Thunderbolts are not a traditional superhero group, but rather a team brought together due to their shared experience of being framed for crimes they didn’t commit. Since this team doesn’t seem to operate like a regular superhero squad, it leaves us wondering what Val intends to do with Avengers Tower.

Thunderbolts*
opens in theaters on May 2, 2025.
