One of 25 1981 Ferrari 512 BB/LMs Heads to Auction

The auction house RM Sotheby’s is preparing to sell an exceptionally uncommon 1981 Ferrari 512 BB/LM (chassis number 35529), which is one of only 25 models produced, and among just 16 third-series variants. Initially owned by Ferrari collector Fabrizio Violati’s Scuderia Supercar Bellancauto, this storied race car has a notable competition history and distinctive design.

As I step into chassis 35529, a masterpiece engineered by Armando Palanca, I feel the pride of ownership wash over me. With its custom-designed bodywork boasting an extended nose and sleek rear profile, it’s clear that this beauty was built for speed. Its first taste of victory came at the 1981 Monza 1000 km, where it clinched the GTX class. This was just the beginning; it went on to conquer the 6 Hours of Pergusa and Mugello 1000 km as well. But its most notable achievements were undoubtedly representing Ferrari at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, not once, but twice – in 1981 and 1984, gracing the global stage with my presence.

From 2014 until then, the Ferrari was owned by the Violati family and showcased in the prestigious Maranello Rosso Collection. Starting from 2022 and lasting till 2024, a thorough restoration worth over $155,000 USD was conducted by Britec Motorsports. This extensive work encompassed a rebuild of the chassis, an engine overhaul, as well as detailed crack-testing on essential components to guarantee it’s ready for racing.

This unique, Ferrari 512 BB/LM, authenticated by Ferrari Classiche due to its original engine, is predicted to sell for up to $2,600,000 USD. Bidding on this exclusive piece will commence on February 4 as part of RM Sotheby’s Paris Auction.
