After two successful Broadway musicals based on Michael Jackson, a brand-new biographical movie about him is in development and will soon be shown in cinemas. One of the actors in Michael is Kat Graham, who has been chosen to play the legendary Diana Ross. Recently, MovieWeb had the chance to talk with Graham while she was promoting her latest project, a crime thriller from Tyler Perry called Duplicity. During this interview, Graham gave some insights about the eagerly awaited Michael Jackson biopic.
In a conversation we had, Graham expressed that the film contains fantastic music and exceptional moments that truly left him amazed. He particularly praised Jaafar [Jackson] for his remarkable abilities in capturing these elements. Naturally, Antoine Fuqua was also mentioned as someone who shares my enthusiasm.
For now, you might catch Graham starring in Tyler Perry’s newest production, “Duplicity”, currently available on Prime Video. She shared with us her deep-seated appreciation for this influential figure in Hollywood.
For more than a decade, Tyler Perry has been my favorite artist. I’ve always set aside money to buy his plays on DVD and read every interview he gave. Even while working on ‘The Vampire Diaries’, I decided to stay in Atlanta, hoping for the chance to work with him someday. That show began 16 years ago.
Graham mentioned, “He served as my guiding light.” Essentially, he’s saying that while he admires many actresses such as Halle Berry, Thandie Newton, and others, his fandom for them wasn’t comparable to the awe he had for remarkable producers like Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Tyler Perry, and Pharrell Williams, who are all exceptional creators.
Kat Graham Says Tyler Perry Is “One of My Idols”
Later, during the collaboration between Graham and Perry for their movie project, it seemed like the cherry on top of the sundae for her. She described Perry as “one of my role models” and stated that her admiration grew even stronger after working together.
I had a wonderful opportunity to closely observe him and appreciate various aspects of his character – his kindness towards people, his brilliance, humor, focus, and charm. Witnessing these qualities in person left me in awe, confirming my belief that I made the right decision by following this man for over 15 years and investing my time, resources, and energy into understanding his journey.
In the gritty role of an unyielding lawyer in “Tyler Perry’s Duplicity,” Graham shared personal insights that contributed to her captivating portrayal. “My mother, who passed away, was a long-time paralegal secretary, and my father was an attorney. The majority of my father’s family are diplomats from Liberia,” she explained. “Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by attorneys. In fact, during one therapy session, it was pointed out to me that when I’m trying to make a point, I act like a lawyer.” Here’s your chance to witness Graham’s genuine performance.
