The new live-action adaptation of How To Train Your Dragon maintains the essence of the 2010 animated movie while introducing fresh elements and establishing its unique style. Initially, the script for this upcoming movie was planned to incorporate a well-known scene from the original. In fact, director Dean DeBlois shared with me that there was a particular scene he firmly believed would enhance the live-action version of the film.
The real-life adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon” will be available for purchase at home starting July 15th. If you’ve watched it in theaters before, you might recall a scene featuring Toothless and the Terrible Terrors, a group of adorable but naughty miniature dragons that were left out of the original filming.
Initially, the director and his creative team determined late in the filmmaking process that the particular scene should be eliminated. Despite this, the director, Dean, held a strong conviction that the audience needed to grasp dragons aren’t fireproof on the inside. He believed this scene was crucial to conveying this idea effectively.
In simpler terms, I believe that the beach break scene in the animated movie served as an important foundation for emphasizing that dragons aren’t fireproof internally. The part where Terrible Terrors were squabbling over fish and Toothless accidentally illuminating another dragon’s belly with his own gas seemed like a setup for a later, more significant event, or a payoff.
Instead, the movie exceeded the two-hour mark – much longer than the original 98-minute animated version from fifteen years back. So, some elements needed to be cut.
So, What Happened To The Terrible Terrors Scene?
In the end, even though the director found the charming scene delightful, since it was enjoyable for both Toothless and the miniature flying dragons, he decided to remove it. When I enquired about its fate, he explained:
In the middle of the narrative, there was a section that seemed slow. We considered eliminating it, as the third act’s storytelling could effectively convey the intended message. After some time, we realized that we didn’t miss it. It was an engaging scene, but not essential in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, unlike its animated counterpart for younger audiences.
If you’re a fan of the Terrible Terrors from How To Train Your Dragon, here’s some exciting news! The live-action adaptation is set to be released digitally and later on Blu-ray and DVD, and with it comes a variety of special features. Among them, we can look forward to seeing Toothless and the Terrible Terrors in a scene that didn’t make the final cut, as well as another deleted scene called “Beach Break.” Unfortunately, Beach Break was only partially developed before the film reached its complete form.
Beginning July 15th, How To Train Your Dragon will become available for digital viewing at home. However, if you prefer a physical copy, it will be released on Blu-ray and DVD for purchase on August 12th. Additionally, there will be various bonus features added, totalling over 75 minutes of extra content. If you’re as fond of the Isle of Berk as I am, these extras are definitely worth checking out.
