As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I’ve been following One Piece since its early days. The series has evolved significantly over the years, and the recent boost it’s receiving on Netflix is a testament to its timeless appeal.
For some time now, the anime series “One Piece” has been highly acclaimed within the community. However, its recent surge in popularity on Netflix, alongside the successful live-action adaptation, appears to have invigorated the franchise further. The scale of this success is such that Netflix is commissioning a remake of the animated series from WIT Studio, despite the fact that the original anime and manga are still being produced. Some fans might question the necessity of another series delving into the original material, but with creator Eiichiro Oda offering guidance to the new creative team, I find myself quite intrigued.
One Piece is preparing to accurately replicate the manga, so adjustments and modifications will naturally occur in this adaptation that aren’t present in the original anime. For viewers with a Netflix subscription, new episodes are being released weekly. In an interview during One Piece Day, production staff shared updates on the new animation, which caught the attention of creator Eiichiro Oda who offered suggestions to those working on the remake.
Instead of strictly following the manga of One Piece, the anime team could absorb its essence and create a new version that reflects their unique style.
Rarely do you see a franchise creator advising remake creators to introduce their own distinctive approach instead of closely following the original. However, in this case, I’m looking forward to it because Oda is endorsing these changes, and there are aspects of the initial anime that I believe we’d rather move past.

Besides unnecessary scenes that might not hold up well today, some early representations of LGBTQ+ characters in One Piece may be seen as outdated or offensive by modern standards. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t a reflection on the original series itself, as societal norms and acceptability evolve over time. This consideration also extends to how characters like Bon Clay might be portrayed should they appear in Season 2 of the live-action adaptation.
As a dedicated fan, it’s become apparent to me that sometimes, Oda, the creator of this captivating anime, has introduced concepts or plotlines that have evolved over time. For instance, when CP9 first mentioned “haki” in the Enies Lobby arc, they referred to it differently than what we now know. I’m positive there are other instances where similar changes were made, and I can’t wait to spot them!
In essence, much like long-time anime enthusiast Alexandra Ramos, I have grown fond of the live-action adaptation. However, being an anime fan at heart, I’m currently engrossed in the original series, eagerly awaiting more live-action episodes. Frankly, it would be a tough convincing act to get me to experience the story again in The One Piece. Eagerness sets in as creator Oda advocates for the remake, hoping that fresh perspectives might bring changes to how this version tackles certain storylines or aspects. Fingers crossed that the creators heed his advice and produce another remarkable addition to the franchise for us fans.
