One Thing About The Studio That’s Driving Me Absolutely Nuts

Initially, upon learning about “The Studio“, my enthusiasm soared high. Being a devoted fan of Robert Altman’s 1992 film “The Player“, a significant influence on “The Studio“, and also an ardent admirer of “The Offer“, a Paramount+ exclusive, I was eager to see what “The Studio” had in store. The “behind-the-scenes” elements and cameos from “Entourage” were an added bonus that piqued my interest even more. Consequently, “The Studio” seemed quite promising to me. As we’ve progressed a few episodes into the series, I can identify some aspects it handles exceptionally well, which I shall discuss, but I find myself struggling to overlook the inconsistent character behavior of Seth Rogen’s character, Matt Remick.

The satire of the entertainment industry is spot-on, and some characters truly shine. Catherine O’Hara, portraying Patty, the ex-studio head ousted by Matt, is side-splittingly funny. Maya, played by Katheryn Hahn, a longtime marketing pro striving to be a trendy twenty-something, is my personal favorite character in the show.

The appearances in this movie have been incredibly entertaining! Martin Scorsese, Anthony Mackie, and Ron Howard are hilarious, while the shorter appearances, such as Charlize Theron, Steve Buscemi, Paul Dano, and others, are just as enjoyable. It’s always amusing to watch well-known celebrities portray over-the-top versions of themselves.

In my opinion, “The Studio” skillfully employs the one-shot approach, a technique that, while becoming increasingly prevalent, is used effectively here. It serves not only as a clever satire but also amplifies the anxiety and tension experienced by the protagonist, Matt, in every episode. The visuals are top-notch, and there are numerous moments that will leave you giggling uncontrollably. Consequently, it’s no wonder that this series has garnered such positive acclaim from critics.

I Just Can’t Buy Seth Rogan’s Character

Matt Remick, as depicted on the show, boasts over 20 years of experience in the film industry and has climbed the ladder to reach a prominent position. At times, it’s clear how he managed this success. He entered into a large-scale franchise agreement at some point previously, and during his initial chat with Patty in the premiere episode, he appears to have a firm grasp of the necessary steps ahead.

Most of the time, he appears bumbling and incompetent on the show, yet he’s not exactly an imbecile. Instead, it seems like he lacks understanding of his role within the industry, which is quite perplexing. It’s hard to fathom that a man with decades of experience in the business could be so clueless about film sets. Matt has made numerous movies throughout his career, yet he still seems starstruck by most people he encounters. This raises questions: Is he an executive with years of industry knowledge or a novice working on their first project? His behavior simply doesn’t add up. It’s plausible for someone in a high-powered position to be unintelligent, but they wouldn’t be this oblivious.

Many people are really enjoying “The Studio” due to its humor and creativity, and I’m not planning on stopping my enjoyment of it… for now! Here’s hoping that Matt improves in his role, as the slapstick comedy becomes more subtle or at least his character’s naivety matures. The satire is brilliant, but it needs relatable characters to maintain its effectiveness over time.
