According to recent news from Deadline, a new installment of the fan-favorite show is being created specifically for Netflix. In this continuation, original cast members and co-hosts of the Drama Queens podcast, Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton, will return to their roles and serve as executive producers. Discussions are underway for Danneel Ackles to reprise her character Rachel Scott and also executive produce alongside her brother Jensen Ackles, under their Chaos Machine production company. Becky Hartman Edwards from Firefly Lane will be at the helm of this exciting project.

20 years after the original series, we find our beloved characters Brooke and Peyton as parents of teenagers, dealing with issues similar to those they encountered before – love, self-doubts, and sorrow.

The show “One Tree Hill” initially aired in 2003 on both the CW and later the WB network. This drama series centered around half-brothers Lucas (played by Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty), along with their group of friends, as they journeyed through adolescence and adulthood in Tree Hill, North Carolina. After nine seasons, the show ended in 2012. However, in 2017, allegations about series creator Mark Schwahn regarding sexual harassment surfaced. It’s important to note that he has no involvement with the upcoming series.

2021 saw the debut of the “Drama Queens” podcast by Bush and Burton, along with Bethany Joy Lenz, a key cast member from the original “One Tree Hill” series playing Haley James throughout its duration. At this point, it’s unclear if Lenz (who expressed interest in reprising her role for a reboot) will be involved in the upcoming sequel series. Since his departure from “One Tree Hill” after season 6, Burton has stepped away from the podcast as they delve into the seventh season. Robert Buckley, who played Chad Evans, is now taking over hosting duties from her.

In 2009, both Burton and Murray departed from the series. In their final season together, characters Peyton (played by Burton) and Lucas (played by Murray) got married and had a daughter. Although the show might explore their relationship further, since Murray has expressed no intention of returning for the sequel, it seems unlikely that Peyton and Lucas were destined to be together. It’s worth mentioning that Bush and Murray had a brief real-life marriage that didn’t end well. As for Brooke (played by Bush), the series finale showed her married to Julian (Austin Nichols) and a mother of twins. We’ll have to wait and see if Nichols will reappear or if Brooke’s storyline will take a new romantic turn.

Fans of the original series will undoubtedly not want a conflict between the beloved couple, Lafferty’s Lucas and Lenz’s Haley. They started their romantic journey in the first season, eventually becoming parents to Jamie and Lydia. It’s tough to envision one character reappearing without the other, so we’re hoping that if the show is given a formal nod of approval, we can delve deeper into their love story. If the series gets the go-ahead, it’s expected that more members of the original cast will be asked to return.
