A recent survey indicates that approximately two-thirds (65%) of individuals with disabilities expressed a preference for viewing movies in theaters rather than at home. However, just 4% of those surveyed felt that movie theaters fully met their accessibility requirements.
The Inevitable Foundation, a non-profit organization that champions for filmmakers with disabilities, conducted a survey on the theater experiences of more than 100 disabled moviegoers over the past two years. This survey covered various aspects, including preferences and requirements for accessible seating as well as open captioning.
According to this report, exhibition and distribution companies can significantly boost overall viewer contentment by focusing on and catering to the needs of individuals with disabilities and their communities. By doing so, they not only enhance comfort and enjoyment for all viewers but also tap into a largely untouched market sector.
Approximately 42% of the participants expressed that suitable seating options, such as recliners or wheelchair spaces, were unavailable to them when they required them, whereas about 68% have found themselves in cinemas without readily accessible restrooms.
63% of participants who have sensitivities to light and sound due to their disabilities expressed a preference for watching movies at a cinema designed with reduced sensory elements, featuring lower volume levels and increased illumination.
Regarding the preference for captions in movie theaters, respondents often choose open caption options over handheld or device-based captioning systems, which may malfunction. Interestingly, about 58% of surveyed audiences with disabilities expressed a desire for open captions to be offered occasionally, while 22% prefer them to always be available.
The report suggests that by viewing accessibility as an investment instead of an expense, theater owners and distributors could cultivate customer loyalty, establish trust, and tap into a niche market worth approximately $21 billion in disposable income.
