As a longtime fan of the captivating world of “Only Murders in the Building,” I can confidently say that the show’s fourth season is shaping up to be another thrilling ride! The transition from the East Coast to the West Coast brings a fresh perspective and introduces new mysteries, keeping us hooked.
Warning: This discussion may reveal plot points from the first episode of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 titled “Once Upon a Time in the West”.
The group embarks on a journey to the West Coast as they kick off the amusing, innovative fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building”. Charles Haden-Savage (portrayed by Steve Martin) follows his missing stunt double, Sazz Pataki (played by Jane Lynch), while Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) grapples with complications in his relationship with Loretta Durkin, a new addition to the cast from season 3, played by Meryl Streep. Meanwhile, Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) finds herself homeless after losing her apartment in the Arconia and is seeking temporary shelter.
On their journey, Charles, Mabel, and Oliver make a pit stop at a familiar spot of Charles’, an old residential hotel named Sunset Swan. He recounts that this place was once the scene of numerous wild celebrity parties and has hosted many famous individuals. As they explore its courtyard, Charles receives a hint about Sazz’s location, which directs the entire group back to New York City.
Unfortunately, if you want to reserve a room at the fictional Sunset Swan, it’s bad luck for you just like Sazz’s; it doesn’t exist in reality. However, it seems to be based on real-life hotels such as the Chateau Marmont and Beverly Hills Hotel, along with closed locations like The Garden of Allah. Moreover, at least one person Charles remembers staying at the Sunset Swan wasn’t actually living in a hotel when she passed away, but she did vanish from one.
The Black Dahlia did not stay at the Sunset Swan either
Charles Haden-Savage mentions Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia, who tragically met her end through murder in Los Angeles in January 1947. It’s important to clarify that the actual Short did not reside at the Sunset Swan, although she was lodging near a hotel before her disappearance. At that time, when she mysteriously vanished from The Biltmore Hotel (where her sister was on vacation), she was actually living in an apartment located behind a nightclub, The Florentine Gardens, and working as a waitress while pursuing acting aspirations.
Many other performers have come and gone from places such as the Chateau Marmont throughout their careers in Hollywood. A few even met their end there, like John Belushi who tragically overdosed on heroin and cocaine at the hotel in 1982. Let’s hope that the lives of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel will be less dramatic as the fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building” unfolds and airs each Tuesday.
