‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4: Who Killed Jane Lynch? A Midpoint Update

As a die-hard fan of “Only Murders in the Building” since its inception, I’ve been following every twist and turn with bated breath. The latest episode has me convinced that we’re looking at this season’s killer right in the face – or should I say, behind it?

[This story contains spoilers from season four, episode five of OMITB.]

Who killed Sazz Pataki?

This ongoing mystery about “Only Murders in the Building” centers around their fourth murder case, which has become particularly significant since it involves the death of Charles-Haden Savage’s (Steve Martin) friend and collaborator Sazz (Jane Lynch). The case remains unsolved even as we reach the midpoint of season four, suggesting that more complications may arise. In fact, the situation seems to be escalating, potentially leading to additional victims.

A significant portion of this season centers around a biopic featuring the Arconia trio: Charles (portrayed by Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez). In the upcoming film, Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, and Eva Longoria will step into these roles. The case they’re investigating has made them suspect that the individual who killed Jane Lynch’s character Sazz is likely linked to the movie itself. Interestingly, a set of footprints discovered in an abandoned apartment belonging to a suspect point directly to Tawny and Trina Brothers, the twin-directors responsible for the Only Murders film, portrayed by Siena Werber and Catherine Cohen. As the crew is about to make this connection, the lights on set suddenly go out, and a gunshot echoes through the air.

In the upcoming season of “Only Murders in the Building,” there’s a hint that real-life violence might mirror events from the fictional movie within the show itself. This level of intricacy is characteristic of OMITB, which remains as engaging as ever in its fourth season. As we approach the midpoint, let’s discuss some potential culprits.

The Brothers Sisters

To continue from where we previously stood: Tawny and Trina, portrayed by Siena Werber and Catherine Cohen, the creative minds behind this season’s film-within-the-series. For now, they can be ruled out as suspects. Although it might seem premature, we won’t leave you hanging at the midpoint of season four with the real killers in suspense. Regardless of why their footprints are found in the Arconia, it’s not due to them wielding a sniper rifle and taking a life. Incidentally…

Sazz

Is it possible that Sazz might not truly be deceased? The stunt performer was involved in some mystery before her apparent demise. If she wasn’t killed, then one possibility is that someone shot and captured Sazz, explaining her sudden disappearance. Another theory suggests that Sazz could have orchestrated her own death as part of a complex scheme. Given her unique blood type, which matches Charles’, she has the means to convincingly stage her own death using her own blood. We are aware that she can handle falls, so if her audience is actually misdirected, then we may already have been deceived – we saw her being shot but not witnessing her actual demise. There’s a hint of “Professor Dudenoff,” a character who some speculate will turn out to be the arch-nemesis to the Arconia trio’s collective Sherlock, much like Professor Moriarty. If such a character exists, Sazz could well be the perfect candidate for this role.

Howard

A quick mention here that Michael Cyril Creighton’s Howard Morris has to stay on the murder suspect board until either he’s revealed as a killer, or the show ends. If there’s a Moriarty who lives in the Arconia, there’s no one better for the job than Howard, the most enduring neighborly cast member of the show. He was also the trio’s very first interview suspect all the way back in the original season, which would be one heck of a long con on the audience. Howard’s heel turn does not feel inevitable or even likely, but it always has to be a possibility if we’re looking at which suspects would bring the biggest gut punch.

Paul Rudd…?

Intriguing twist ahead! The character who was killed in season three of our series is now under suspicion in season four – at least metaphorically speaking. While Rudd’s Ben Glenroy is indeed deceased, he reappears in season four as a fresh character: Glen Stubbins, a stuntman with whom Pataki had crossed paths previously. Interestingly, this new character appears on the set of our latest movie during a time when gunshots are echoing through the air. Given the metafictional nature of our show, it would certainly be an unexpected twist if the third murder victim were to become the newest killer. My intuition: we’re getting warmer, but not quite there yet…

Our Pick?

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4: Who Killed Jane Lynch? A Midpoint Update

As we approach the final five episodes of this series, I’m leaning towards Sazz as the culprit. This season has been centered around doubles, showing how we reflect and echo each other, yet remain blind to each other’s true identities. The most fitting representation of this theme could be the murderer and the victim being one and the same, making Rudd an interesting suspect. However, if we choose to explore that theory further, let’s shift our focus to this season’s actual victim. It seems like “Only Murders” is ready to delve into darker territories, and no one seems more primed for it at the moment than Sazz herself.
