As a dedicated cinephile who has spent countless hours in the dimly lit halls of cinemas, I must say that 2024 has been a rollercoaster ride for Bollywood. The supernatural genre was like a magical elixir, rejuvenating the industry and drawing us movie enthusiasts to the big screen. From Shaitaan to Stree 2, these films were as enchanting as a moonlit night in the hills of Manali.
2024 is drawing to a close in just a few days, and it’s time to reflect on the year gone by. In Bollywood, we’ve seen some standout performances from the supernatural genre, as well as a surge of re-releases gracing our movie screens. Here are my thoughts, as a film enthusiast, on the past year in the Hindi film industry.
It’s clear that supernatural movies were all the rage recently. Movies like “Shaitaan” starring Ajay Devgn, “Munjya” with Sharvari and Abhay Verma, “Stree 2” featuring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, and “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” starring Kartik Aaryan were all box office hits. In fact, I found myself drawn to the cinemas by this intriguing genre.
In addition to more serious films, I found myself enjoying comedies such as “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,” “Laapataa Ladies,” and “Crew” just as much. These movies resonated with fellow film enthusiasts too, as they proved successful at the box office.
It seems that numerous films faced challenges due to an inadequately organized release schedule, causing conflicts that might have been prevented. Major festival dates such as Independence Day, Dussehra, and Diwali were plagued with clashes, but many weeks including the Gandhi Jayanti weekend remained void of competition. I believe it is quite possible that many films could have avoided financial failure at the box office if they had opted for a solo release instead.
A notable trend in 2024 was the return of classic Bollywood movies, and revisiting Kal Ho Naa Ho from 1993, featuring stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Saif Ali Khan, was a standout moment for me. Even though I appreciated some contemporary films this year, nothing could beat the nostalgia and pure enjoyment offered by a typical Bollywood film.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must confess that I’ve been absolutely thrilled to see the warm reception given to numerous re-releases such as Rockstar, Laila Majnu, Veer-Zaara, and many others. These timeless classics never fail to captivate me all over again!
As an ardent cinema enthusiast, it’s hard not to notice the conspicuous absence of blockbusters featuring my beloved stars this year. The likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, and a host of others have been MIA when it comes to new releases on the big screen. This could very well be one of the factors fueling the resurgence of nostalgia, with fans like me eagerly revisiting classic films.
To sum up, it seems that 2024 offered both successes and lessons for Bollywood, providing us with noteworthy achievements as well as areas for improvement in the time ahead.
