OPINION: Bollywood is paying the price as managers take control of the show; here’s how

There’s something special about classic films that we all cherish, and it’s quite evident why – the storylines, acting, humor, emotions, and other aspects were truly captivating. Back in the day, Bollywood stars would work closely with writers and directors to refine the scripts according to their preferences. They relied on gut feelings, personal connections, and curiosity when making decisions about which projects to take up. However, that time is gradually being overshadowed by a new system where agents and managers have become more than just intermediaries; they are essentially calling the shots.

Nowadays, many popular actors rarely take the time to read a script before agreeing to a film. Instead, their representatives make the decisions about which projects are worth considering, often influenced by trends, partnerships with brands, or the potential marketability of the storyline. In my opinion, this change in decision-making power signifies a decline in creative freedom within Bollywood, and it’s certainly concerning!

Indeed, there were always figures like managers in the field, but the outstanding ones functioned as team players rather than leaders. They served to evaluate offers, negotiate contracts, and safeguard their clients’ interests without overpowering the artist’s voice. Contrastingly, modern agents have a tendency to prioritize transforming actors into marketable commodities, often neglecting or undervaluing scripts that lack mainstream appeal or guaranteed success at the box office. This shift sometimes overshadows projects with substance and originality.

The current system is not only stifling the growth of actors, but also hindering the progress of cinema as a whole. Many exceptional directors find it difficult to connect with actors due to managers who don’t recognize the ‘potential’ in their story ideas, which results in many unique tales going untold. Furthermore, when actors allow others to make creative decisions for them, we frequently see movies that are formulaic and lacking in emotional resonance or daringness. However, it’s important to note that not every actor or film follows this pattern.

Simultaneously, various Bollywood celebrities have hinted at the fact that they’ve missed out on significant films due to their teams not advocating for them strongly enough. Conversely, others have talked about personally selecting their projects and enjoying the benefits that come with being actively involved in their choices.

Instead of solely blaming managers, I recognize their significant role, particularly in dynamic industries like Bollywood. However, it’s crucial to reestablish equilibrium. Actors should regain control over their own careers. Hearing a script isn’t just about selecting a project; it involves staying in touch with one’s artistic abilities and making choices based on instinctive feelings as well.

Ultimately, it’s the tales that fuel the silver screen. When creators lose touch with these narratives, the enchantment wanes, and I believe Bollywood deserves more than just that.
