OPINION: In sea of urban chaos, how village-themed stories like Panchayat and Dupahiya are offering rural respite

In the realm of glitzy web series packed with spies, crime, and action, there are some humble and affectionate productions that are subtly capturing people’s affections. These shows, like Panchayat and Dupahiya, are based on genuine stories from rural areas and lack big celebrities or intense plotlines; however, they ring true to life.

The series titled “Panchayat” features Jitendar Kumar, Neena Gupta, and Raghubir Yadav, and it follows the life of a young man named Abhishek Tripathi who holds the position of secretary in a rural area.

Through a humorous yet authentic narration of daily happenings in rural India, the story unfolds, revealing its challenges, charm, and inhabitants. Similar to Dupahiya, this work concentrates on the lifestyle and concerns in small-town settings, which are often overshadowed by urban bustle.

Currently, the creators behind Panchayat (TVF) are working on a fresh production titled Gram Chikitsalay. This upcoming show sheds light on the struggles and shortcomings of rural healthcare systems.

The narrative unfolds around a learned physician, who yearns to make a difference, yet encounters obstacles from inexperienced traditional healers, skeptical villagers, and the local authorities. It illustrates the challenging nature of instigating change when people are accustomed to outdated, flawed customs.

Films akin to “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” starring Akshay Kumar addressed a comparable issue. Through a blend of humor and emotion, it brought attention to the hardships faced by rural women due to lack of decent sanitation facilities.

A different film titled “Swades” demonstrates the journey of a person who comes back from overseas with the intention of facilitating electrification in their native village. Similarly, movies such as “Lagaan” and “Well Done Abba” portray the hardships faced by villages in an uncomplicated yet impactful manner.

Instead of relying on glitz and speed for impact, these narratives resonate with us by portraying authentic life experiences, including trials and simple pleasures. In a sea of polished, rapid-fire content, these programs transport us to the essence of India – its rural landscapes and the individuals who inhabit them.

With audiences growing tired of predictable thrillers and exaggerated dramas, it seems the understated strength of stories set in rural areas is starting to gain recognition.
