Original Happy Gilmore Stars Officially Returning for Netflix Sequel

As a seasoned movie critic who’s witnessed the evolution of comedy from the golden age of Vaudeville to the digital revolution, I must admit that the announcement of Happy Gilmore 2 has stirred a sense of nostalgia within me. Back in ’96, when Adam Sandler was still finding his stride and golf movies were as rare as a hole-in-one at the U.S. Open, this zany sports comedy stole my heart. Now, with its return, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been invited to an exclusive reunion of old friends—one that includes Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, and a host of other intriguing new faces.

It was inevitable that, amidst the sea of remakes and continuations, someone would eventually revisit the 1996 comedy gem “Happy Gilmore,” which found Adam Sandler in his fledgling film career. Now, Netflix is breathing new life into this series by producing a sequel. In this revival, Sandler and other beloved cast members are set to reprise their iconic roles. The original story followed Sandler as a floundering hockey player who took up golf to save his grandmother’s house. His golf coach was the retired golfer with a hand-eating alligator past, Chubbs, portrayed by the late Carl Weathers.

In the works for Netflix is a sequel titled “Happy Gilmore 2,” where we can expect several key players from the first installment to reprise their roles. Among them are Sanders, along with Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen. These two actors portrayed Scooter McGavin and Virginia Venet in the original film. As for the movie’s plot, details are scarce at this point, but with a gap since we last saw Happy Gilmore and his companions, there’s plenty of room to explore new directions for the storyline.

McGavin, Venet, and Gilmore are all set to return since they have been confirmed as returning characters by Netflix. Unfortunately, Weathers won’t be back because his character, Chubbs, met an untimely end in the first movie, but a tribute to his iconic role is still possible. In the spirit of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, where Jenna Ortega joined the cast for the sequel, the Happy Gilmore 2 cast will include some notable actors who didn’t appear in the original film.

It’s not just Bad Bunny who is new to the acting scene, other fresh faces are also expected.

In a sports-themed movie, it’s logical that some professional athletes might make an appearance, and at the moment, Travis Kelce from the Kansas City Chiefs is confirmed to be one of them. Known for his sporting prowess and high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift, Kelce has gained widespread recognition. Additionally, Benny Safdie and Nick Swardson have been announced to feature in the film. As more details about the cast and plot emerge during production, we’ll have a better understanding of who else might be involved and what the movie is all about. Although Ben Stiller hinted at his possible return, he hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

The sequel to “Happy Gilmore,” titled “Happy Gilmore 2,” is helmed by Kyle Newacheck, who has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his work on FX’s “What We Do In The Shadows.” Alongside Adam Sandler, the script for this movie was penned by Tim Herlihy, a regular collaborator of Sandler’s. Their latest joint project was “Hubie Halloween,” released in 2020 and exclusively available on Netflix, similar to “Happy Gilmore 2.
