Title “The Hunger Games: Dawn at the Reaping” resurrects one of the main voices that kick-started the movie series. With “The Hunger Games: Dawn at the Reaping” now available on bookstore shelves and gaining popularity, selling 1.5 million copies in just a week, fans are excitedly anticipating the novel’s cinematic adaptation. The narrative unfolds 24 years prior to the events of “The Hunger Games” and focuses on Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the initial four films, during his participation in the deadly games.
According to reports from Discussing Film, Billy Ray, who previously collaborated on the screenplay for “The Hunger Games” with director Gary Ross and author Suzanne Collins in 2012, has been tapped to write the script for an upcoming film titled “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping“. Ray’s other notable works as a screenwriter include “Captain Phillips”, “Gemini Man”, “Richard Jewell”, and “Terminator: Dark Fate”.
Since 2013’s “Catching Fire,” Director Francis Lawrence has been at the helm of all “Hunger Games” films and is set to direct “Sunrise on the Reaping.” Actors are being cast for the role of Haymitch Abernathy, with filming anticipated this summer. The release date for “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is scheduled for November 20, 2026, which will be the Friday before Thanksgiving, a traditionally popular opening day for films in this franchise since “Catching Fire.
‘The Hunger Games’ Franchise is Going Strong
The movie adaptations of “The Hunger Games” series have been fortunate in attracting skilled screenwriters. Michael Arndt, renowned for his work on “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Toy Story 3”, penned both “Catching Fire” and the latest prequel film, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”. The scripts for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1” and “2” were jointly written by Peter Craig (known for “The Batman”) and Danny Strong (“Dope Sick”). It may not appear significant initially, but it’s quite notable that Ray, one of the original film’s writers, is back to script the upcoming movie “Sunrise on the Reaping”. This is worth mentioning as he will be collaborating with the director who has steered the series since the second film to greater heights.
Despite being the lowest-earning film in the Hunger Games series, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes garnered positive buzz and performed admirably at the box office amidst underperforming films such as The Marvels, Wish, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Given that Lionsgate has heavily invested in the Hunger Games franchise over time, the strong sales of Sunrise on the Reaping could hint at a resurgence in audience interest for the series. This is supported by the fact that the book’s sales have surpassed those of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as well as Mockingjay.
As a devoted cinephile, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming release of “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”. It’s been an astonishing 14 years since the first “Hunger Games” movie premiered and left audiences spellbound worldwide. With Francis Lawrence back at the helm, there’s a strong possibility that the series could recreate its remarkable legacy once more.
