As a long-time devotee of the Karate Kid universe, who has witnessed the evolution of this saga since its humble beginnings, I find myself torn between anticipation and dismay upon hearing Martin Kove’s statement about his potential return in Karate Kid: Legends. On one hand, the prospect of witnessing the continued growth of Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence, Miguel Diaz, and Robby Keene in Season 6 of Cobra Kai has me brimming with excitement. On the other, the thought of a Karate Kid film without the menacing presence of Kreese leaves me feeling like something essential is missing from the equation – akin to a karate match without a proper snap kick.
In its final season, the series “Cobra Kai” is set to conclude the tales of characters like Daniel LaRusso, Johnny Lawrence, Miguel Diaz, and Robby Keene. Although certain cast members are moving forward into future projects, it appears that a veteran actor from the franchise won’t be partaking in the upcoming theatrical film.
After the 2010 remake featuring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, it was officially confirmed in 2022 that a new film titled “Karate Kid: Legends” is in production, with Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, and other stars set to join the cast. This announcement also revealed that the original “Karate Kid” films, the remake, and the “Cobra Kai” series will all take place within the same interconnected universe.
In a recent chat with Kyle Meredith, Martin Kove – famously known for portraying Kreese in Cobra Kai – was queried about his potential role in Karate Kid: Legends. He disclosed that several cast members, including himself, weren’t included in the project.
Indeed, that was an interesting twist. Robert Kamen, rather than just penning the script, created all three and showcased his brilliance. He even supported the writers of Cobra Kai, giving them his approval. Few of us had any insight into what this movie’s plot would be about. I recall enjoying myself immensely watching my kids and Will Smith in their film, and he was particularly mindful of staying loyal to our memories from the three movies. It was peculiar, however, to hear “No mercy” translated as a subtitle in Japanese, given that it took place in Japan and lacked the American values associated with the original films. Nevertheless, it managed to make a profit and was a decent movie overall.
In this image, it remains a mystery to me. It seems to be shrouded in secrecy quite effectively. As of yet, I haven’t discussed the matter with Ralph; I plan to soon. Our conversations about the movie have been limited so far. None of us were extended an invitation to participate in it. When I’m not invited, I find it acceptable because I understand why: They’re trying to avoid complications or potential trouble.
It seems highly improbable that Kove’s comments point to Kreese’s appearance in Karate Kid: Legends, given that filming concluded over a year ago. This might mean that some cherished characters such as Johnny (played by William Zabka) could be absent from this movie.
Should Kreese Return in ‘Karate Kid: Legends?’
From the exclusive trailer unveiled at the New York Comic Con in October, it appears that “Karate Kid: Legends” revolves around Li Fong, portrayed by Ben Wang, who is a new pupil of Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). In due course, Daniel LaRusso makes an appearance in Beijing to help train Li Fong, which could possibly lead to a confrontation. The question remains: will their training styles ultimately clash or cooperate?
In this movie, it appears that the main focus is on connecting the remake to the original storyline. Therefore, appearances like those of William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence and Martin Kove as Kreese might initially seem quite daring. However, despite Johnny being prominent, Kreese stood out exceptionally in “Cobra Kai”, and his impact went way beyond him. This means a short cameo by him at the film’s end could suggest potential sequels while also offering a delightful wink to the franchise’s origins for fans.
