Oscars 2025: Jordan Picks Documentary ‘My Sweet Land’ for International Feature Category

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for stories that resonate deeply and shed light on global conflicts, I am thrilled to see Jordan’s entry for the 97th Academy Awards – “My Sweet Land”. This poignant documentary, under the skilled direction of Sareen Hairabedian, promises to be a powerful narrative that delves into the heart of a conflict zone and offers a glimpse into the dreams and struggles of an ordinary boy named Vrej.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve chosen “My Sweet Land,” directed by the talented Sareen Hairabedian, to represent our nation at the 97th Academy Awards next year, competing in the Best International Feature Film category.

The movie chronicles the story of Vrej, an 11-year-old aspiring dentist, who resides in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, which is a focal point of a prolonged ethnic and territorial dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, another wave of conflict forces Vrej and his family to evacuate. Upon their return, they discover that their home has been destroyed, along with Vrej’s hopes for a peaceful existence.

This year, I had the privilege of premiering my first full-length film, “My Sweet Land,” at the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival. Following the success of my documentary short, “We Are Not Done Yet,” produced by HBO, this feature marks a significant step forward in my career as a filmmaker.

Jordanian film producer, Azza Hourani, created the movie titled “My Sweet Land“, a collaborative effort between Ireland, France, Jordan, and the United States.

To this day, Jordan has received just a solitary Oscar nomination, which was for the film “Theeb” by Naji Abu Nowar, in the year 2015.

On December 17th, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will reveal its list of potential candidates for the best international feature at the Oscars. The nominees for these awards will be disclosed on January 17th, 2025. Lastly, mark your calendars as the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 2nd, a Sunday.
