As a seasoned gamer of international cinema, I must say that the anticipation for the upcoming Oscar race is palpable, especially with Norway’s entry, Halfdan Ullmann Tondel’s school-set drama, Armand. Renate Reinsve, a familiar face from Joachim Trier’s double Oscar nominee The Worst Person in the World, grabs my attention as Elisabeth, a local celebrity entangled in an elementary school drama over her son Armand’s sexual abuse allegations.
2025’s Oscar competition sees Norway submitting the school-based drama “Armand,” directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tondel, as their candidate for the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards.
Renate Reinsve, famed for her role in Joachim Trier’s dual Oscar-nominated film The Worst Person in the World, takes on the lead character in the movie Armand. Here, she portrays Elisabeth, a well-known figure within their community who finds herself entangled in a school controversy when her son Armand is accused by a fellow student of sexual misconduct.
At Cannes’ Un Certain Regard segment, Armand made its debut, winning the Camera d’Or award for best first feature. Additionally, it received recognition for best sound, with the Prix de la Meilleure Création Sonore being awarded to the film’s sound designer Mats Lid Støten and composer Ella van der Woude.
IFC Films has acquired the rights for the U.S. release of the film, with plans to screen it for award consideration towards the end of the year (for Armand).
Despite earning six nominations for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, Norway is still waiting to take home the award.
The final date to send entries for the 96th Oscars is set for November 14, 2024. On December 17, the list of potential international feature nominees will be revealed. The nominees themselves will be announced on January 17, 2025. Lastly, mark your calendars: The Academy Awards ceremony for the year 2025 will take place on March 2, a Sunday.
