One of these contenders, titled Santosh, is a multinational Hindi-language production, depicting life in rural northern India. 15 films are contenders for the Oscar shortlist in this category, chosen from a pool of 85 submissions from countries around the globe. Representing the United Kingdom for the 2025 Academy Awards is the film “Santosh,” which debuted at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024 and garnered praise from critics.
For the 97th Oscars, The Academy unveiled their selection list, but unfortunately, India’s submission, Laapataa Ladies, did not make the cut. However, Guneet Monga Kapoor’s film Anuja received acknowledgment in the Short Film (Live Action) category.
