Last week, I found myself on the edge of my seat as the 2025 SAG Awards unfolded. These awards, held after the voting for the 2025 Oscars wrapped up, had everyone buzzing about whether Anora, Mikey Madison, and Adrien Brody’s precursor wins might not lead to Oscar glory. However, the victory of Conclave in the best cast category, along with Demi Moore‘s triumph in best actress and Timothée Chalamet’s win in best actor, sparked rumors that Conclave, Moore, and Chalamet could sweep the Academy Awards.
However, it was discovered that the Oscars had indeed endorsed “Anora”, along with Madison and Brody. Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner was honored as the best picture; in a shocking turn of events, Madison clinched the best actress award over Demi Moore, who many experts predicted would emerge victorious due to her first Oscar nomination after a lengthy career, coupled with wins at the SAG Awards, Critics Choice, and Golden Globes. Remarkably, Brody outperformed Chalamet in the competition.
On Sunday night, it appeared that all three films – Conclave, The Substance, and A Complete Unknown – didn’t perform as well as expected. Despite predictions that Conclave could win best picture and possibly awards for Ralph Fiennes (best actor) and Isabella Rossellini (best supporting actress), it only won one award, for best adapted screenplay. The Substance, too, won only one award – for best makeup and hairstyling. A Complete Unknown, with eight nominations, didn’t win any awards at all. Given that the film about subject Bob Dylan lost in every category, perhaps it was wise of him to skip the ceremony where his biopic came up empty-handed.
Among this year’s most acclaimed films, A Complete Unknown delivered the least impressive performance at the awards ceremony. However, the 10-time nominated films The Brutalist and Wicked each claimed just two awards. Interestingly, Wicked only triumphed in technical categories despite a grand opening performance by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande that showcased a medley of songs, including the famous “Defying Gravity” from Wicked.
This year, Nosferatu took the film community by surprise with its four nominations. However, surprisingly, it failed to win any awards during the ceremony, despite being strongly tipped for success following the nomination announcements.
Unexpected developments also featured indie animation film “Flow” outshining blockbusters like Universal’s “The Wild Robot,” which had garnered the studio’s Annie Award and Critics Choice prize, as well as Disney’s “Inside Out 2.” Previously, “Flow” had been awarded the best animated feature Golden Globe and indie Annie Award.

Among the surprises were the victories of independent animation film “Flow,” which outperformed studio productions such as Universal’s “The Wild Robot,” which had taken home the studio’s Annie Award and Critics Choice prize, and Disney’s “Inside Out 2.” Earlier, “Flow” had received the best animated feature Golden Globe and indie Annie Award.
Following a series of controversial tweets from actress Karla Sofía Gascón causing disruptions to Emilia Pérez’s Oscars campaign, some experts speculated whether the Netflix musical, boasting an impressive 13 nominations, might end up empty-handed or if its sole victory would belong to Zoe Saldaña, who had dominated this year’s precursor awards. Contrary to these predictions, Emilia Pérez surpassed expectations, with Saldaña claiming the win and the film securing best original song for “El Mal,” a number that Saldaña sings in the movie.
On the Oscar night, I was rooting for several films that garnered multiple nominations but walked away empty-handed. Among them were “Sing Sing,” a three-time contender, as well as “The Nickel Boys” and “The Apprentice,” each nominated twice.
