Five years following the triumph at the Oscars with the Best Picture winner “Parasite”, Neon once again shone brightest at the event due to “Anora”.
2025 found me celebrating an extraordinary moment as a gamer – my favorite indie studio, led by the talented Tom Quinn, swept the Oscars with five awards! Their masterpiece, “Anora,” claimed the top titles: best picture, best director (Sean Baker), best actress (Mikey Madison), best original screenplay, and best editing. Incredibly, Sean Baker, the writer-director of “Anora,” was a quadruple threat that night, taking home four Oscars himself for producing, directing, writing, and editing this remarkable film. What an unforgettable gaming year!
Netflix, initially boasting a commanding 18 nominations (courtesy of Emilia Pérez), walked away with only three victories: Zoe Saldaña was awarded Best Supporting Actress, and Emilia Pérez received honors for Best Original Song, with The Only Girl in the Orchestra clinching the award for Best Documentary Short.
Similarly, The Brutalist garnered three victories, with Adrien Brody winning best actor, cinematography, and the score category.
Universal emerged victorious in two categories for the movie “Wicked,” securing awards for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, out of a total of ten nominations. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. also claimed two wins, for “Dune: Part II,” in the Best Sound and Best Visual Effects categories.
One win apiece were achieved by Disney’s Searchlight Pictures (Kieran Culkin’s best supporting actor win for “A Real Pain”), Universal Pictures (screenplay adaptation for “Conclave”), MUBI (makeup and hairstyling for “The Substance”), and Sideshow/Janus Films (best animated feature for “Flow”).
Or, more casually:
Each of Disney’s Searchlight, Universal, MUBI, and Sideshow/Janus films took home one award. Kieran Culkin won best supporting actor for “A Real Pain” at Searchlight, “Conclave” got the screenplay adaptation prize at Universal, “The Substance” won makeup and hairstyling at MUBI, and “Flow” took the best animated feature award at Sideshow/Janus.
Several other winners do not yet have U.S. distribution.
Here’s the detailed analysis:
Neon: 5
A24: 3
Netflix: 3
Universal: 2 (with Focus having 1)
Warner Bros.: 2
Disney’s Searchlight Pictures: 1
Mubi and Sideshow/Janus: 1 each
(Note: Universal has two entries with different brands – Universal and Focus)
