Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

  • Osmos, the hit cell-absorbing puzzler , is back on Android
  • It was pulled due to playability issues, as updates had been nigh impossible
  • Now, developer Hemisphere Games has brought it back with a fresh port

As a long-time mobile gamer who remembers the golden age of Android gaming, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement with the return of Osmos! This unique, physics-based absorber was a staple of my mobile gaming diet back in 2010 and its return is like a reunion with an old friend.

You might recall the unique physics-based puzzle game called Osmos that we named. In this title, you were tasked with a straightforward objective: absorb other microorganisms while ensuring you don’t get absorbed yourself! Regrettably, if you wished to play it on Android devices, there was no option – until today.

Originally launched in 2010, the game Osmos has returned to Google Play Store with a fresh update for newer Android operating systems! After a long hiatus, players can once again immerse themselves in the thrilling micro-organism conflict that this game offers at its peak performance.

As a game developer at Hemisphere Games, I wanted to share an exciting update about our beloved game Osmos. Initially, we partnered with Apportable to bring Osmos to Android. However, the progress on further updates came to a halt when the porting studio closed down. Unfortunately, this led to Osmos being removed from the storefront because it only functioned on 32-bit Android systems that are no longer in use. But here’s the great news: Osmos is back, with a brand-new rebuilt port! Now, gamers can enjoy this classic again on up-to-date Android systems. It’s like getting a second chance to immerse yourself in its unique gameplay and beautiful graphics. Happy gaming!

The powerhouse of the cell

If you remain unconvinced by our numerous positive reviews for the iOS and Android versions of Osmos, or its collection of awards, watching the gameplay video above should certainly persuade you. The unique mechanics of Osmos have surprisingly influenced many other games, which is quite remarkable given that it debuted before social media platforms like Tik-Tok became popular. I can only imagine how successful this game could be on a platform like Tik-Tok if it were released today.

As a gamer, I find myself drawn back to the unique charm of Osmos – a game that feels like a nostalgic throwback worth revisiting. Back then, the possibilities on mobile seemed endless, and I can’t help but hope for a return to those days.
