To make the most of the COTW beta and its upcoming April release, I’ve gathered some useful advice for you to consider!

You Don’t Need a Fancy Controller

In simpler terms, It’s not essential to have a fightstick to enjoy fighting games. Many beginners mistakenly believe they need a high-end Victrix or F300 controller to get started. This misconception often serves as an unnecessary barrier for new players.

In essence, most contemporary fighting games are designed with traditional controllers, often called “pads” in the Fighting Game Community (FGC). This is primarily because game developers aim to attract a larger user base. Given that I don’t have specific statistics, I would guess that the majority of gaming enthusiasts own conventional pads rather than outdated joysticks.

Recently, I’ve made the switch from a fightstick to a standard PS5 controller. It’s been a challenging transition, but I’m starting to feel that modern games like Tekken 8 or Street Fighter 6 seem more comfortable with the ergonomics of a regular gamepad.

Speaking as a fellow enthusiast, I’d say go ahead and choose your preferred fighting stick for immersing yourself in the nostalgic atmosphere of City of the Wolves. I won’t stand in your way if you’re set on preserving that authentic old-school arcade vibe!

Mess Around With Every Character

In the roster for City of Wolves, you’ll see beloved characters such as Rock Howard, Terry Bogard, and Mai Shiranui, but there will also be some fresh faces joining the fray – including Street Fighter’s Ken and Chun-Li who are set to debut in the game during its first season.

In the upcoming version, you’ll find a diverse cast of eight playable characters. I suggest you delve right into the offline training mode with all of them for a feel of their controls, examine their unique movesets, and even test their special abilities.

If something or someone catches your eye aesthetically or functionally, delve deeper to uncover intricate details. Over time, the usually monotonous task of honing skills or experimenting will transform into an exciting journey of exploration.

Smart Style Is There For You

In the SNK series, players often encounter unconventional moves. The City of the Wolves, however, adjusts specific inputs to facilitate easier gameplay. Additionally, it comes equipped with Smart Style control options.

As a devoted gamer, I find that the gameplay of this new title is reminiscent of the Special Style and Modern control schemes in games like Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. This feature enables me to perform intricate special moves with relative ease through simplified directional commands.

In Smart Style, the character move list is designed to have fewer special moves compared to other fighting games. However, there will still be some standard inputs required. Yet, for beginners entering the world of fighting games, this simplified version is ideal as a starting point, so don’t shy away from giving Smart Style a try!

Grab Your Crew and Set Up Some Custom Room Matches

If your circle of companions has never delved into the world of combat-style games before, there’s nothing more fitting than embarking on this adventure side by side.

In the beta version of COTW, there will be an option to play custom room matches. If the idea of sparring with unknown players in casual or ranked settings doesn’t appeal to you, then organizing a friendly game with your friends over Discord while exchanging banter and playing together could be a fun alternative.

Engaging in combat video games feels more enjoyable when you know another person is on the other side of the screen. Hopefully, this leads to finding a consistent sparring partner who will challenge and motivate you for ongoing growth.
