As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of Outer Banks, I have to say that the latest season has truly outdone itself! The suspense, the drama, and the action-packed sequences are simply unparalleled. The catacomb scene between Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) was a masterpiece, reminiscent of classic adventure films like The Goonies and Indiana Jones.
Caution: Here lie spoilers for the initial half of Season 4 for the series, “Outer Banks”, airing in 2024! If you’ve missed the first five episodes, don’t fret! You can watch them on Netflix by subscribing to their service.
As we move into the second half of Season 4 for “Outer Banks”, things are certainly grim…JJ discovered that his real father isn’t who he thought, John B. is growing increasingly anxious about their pursuit, and to top it off, Pope and Sarah are trapped in a flooding catacomb. Despite these less than favorable conditions, this situation has provided an exhilarating, action-packed encounter between the characters portrayed by Jonathan Daviss and Madelyn Cline.
Now, they’ve broken down what it was like filming the Goonies-esque scenes with TopMob.
Jonathan Daviss and Madelyn Cline Had Been Wanting To Share More Scenes Together
In my conversations with the cast of Outer Banks for TopMob, I couldn’t wait to inquire about their significant shared scene as Pope and Sarah have had very little individual time apart.
They had each expressed their desire to collaborate for some time, and specifically, the Daviss mentioned that this kind of scene was something they had asked for previously.
Absolutely, to put it straight, that was a task assigned to us. To be candid, Maddie and I enjoy collaborating immensely. We’re more than just colleagues; we’re good friends. This year, during the off-seasons, we shared the experience of watching Game of Thrones together. It was my debut viewing, while she had already seen it, so she enjoyed watching me navigate through the series.
He went on to say that it was “about time” that Sarah and Pope got some screentime together, while also breaking down what that catacomb set was like. And let’s just say, when it came to those dark sets, I think they got more than they bargained for…
Jonathan Daviss And Madelyn Cline Break Down Filming Their Big Scenes In The Goonies-Like Set
Allow me to paint the picture. By the end of Season 4, Part 1, the majority of the Outer Banks crew were confronting their latest adversary outside. On the other hand, Sarah and Pope found themselves trapped in a labyrinth strikingly similar to those featured in The Goonies or Indiana Jones movies – a rat-infested space. To give you an idea of what it was like, here’s how Jonathan Daviss depicted it:
In the darkness and the chill, there were countless rats scurrying around. That’s the kind of experience it was.
Madelyn Cline elaborated on the sets, explaining that they consisted of three distinct areas. Despite her dislike for the rats present, she acknowledged the intricate craftsmanship that brought these eerie, ancient-looking settings to life, as she put it.
Indeed, their performance was nothing short of spectacular and captivating. The show consisted of three distinct acts, each one impressive in its own right. Truly, they gave it their all, leaving no stone unturned in crafting these mesmerizing performances.
Simultaneously, Madison Bailey, their fellow actor, added her thoughts. Despite not being present in that specific scene or having the chance to visit the sets, she was left astounded by what she saw on screen, describing it as “incredible.” Although it was truly incredible, Kiara suggested that she too felt a sense of apprehension, mentioning that “life was mirroring art” since Sarah also appeared anxious, and so did she.
In the heat of our gaming session together, Jonathan was a rock-solid teammate. His demeanor was so cool and collected that it helped keep me composed too. It wasn’t about elaborate performances; instead, it felt like we were just two players navigating through the virtual world as if it were real life.
Davis likewise brought up this anecdote, praising his co-star by calling her a “trooper.” Nevertheless, it seemed she wasn’t enjoying herself too much during that scene, as he clarified.
Maddie was incredibly brave and authentic during that scene. Some of her reactions weren’t feigned; she genuinely expressed discomfort. As I watched, I struggled to keep a straight face or empathize with her situation. In any case, that sequence was fantastic. It evoked the true spirit of Indiana Jones and The Goonies in what we were all doing together.
The Outer Banks series has long been infused with a mix of Goonies and Indiana Jones vibes, given its storyline revolves around a band of youngsters hunting for buried treasure. Yet, this specific scene exuded an especially intense atmosphere as Sarah and Pope ventured into a catacomb in search of their quarry. In much the same way that Indy or the Goonies’ gang found themselves in perilous predicaments, Davis and Cline’s characters find themselves trapped in a precarious situation they must extricate themselves from during Outer Banks Part 2.
Teasing what’s to come, the Pope performer said:
It seems clear that the catacomb will eventually be full, leaving them no choice but to stay within. Therefore, they must search for an escape route, but their chances appear slim.
Indeed, the narrative isn’t unfolding smoothly for the story’s protagonists. Yet, on-screen, they appear magnificent due to the grandeur of the set design and exceptional acting abilities!
To find out whether Pope and Sarah manage to escape from their damp, rundown, and rodent-infested location, you can tune in to Season 4, Part 2 of Outer Banks when it airs on Netflix’s schedule for 2024 on November 7.
