As a die-hard Outer Banks fan, I must say that the twist at the end of Season 4, Part 1 has left me utterly speechless! The revelation about JJ’s biological father is a bomb so big, it’s making the previous plot twists look like fireworks.
Be cautious! Major plot twists for Season 4, Part 1 of the show “Outer Banks” lie ahead. If you haven’t watched the initial five episodes slated for release in 2024, you can catch them by subscribing to Netflix and streaming online.
In the hit series “Outer Banks”, some significant twists – both factual and emotional – have been dropped, but the bombshell that JJ’s biological father isn’t who was thought could be the biggest shockwave so far. This revelation was unveiled towards the end of Season 4’s first installment. As we anticipate how this news affects the Pogues, I’m pondering over what Rudy Pankow shared about his character’s state of mind during that moment and how his personal thoughts on the plot development influenced the scene.
In the fifth episode of Season 4, there are some significant discussions between JJ, portrayed by Gary Weeks as Luke, and his father, regarding JJ’s biological parents. A letter from Wes Genrette, played by Rudy Pankow, led to the discovery of his father who later disclosed that JJ is the offspring of Chandler Groff and Larissa Genrette. What a stunning revelation!
During an interview with the cast of “Outer Banks” regarding the potential release of Season 4 in Netflix’s 2024 lineup, I inquired about JJ’s emotions following the revelation of these recent findings. To this, Pankow offered an insightful explanation:
It seems JJ was in a state of denial. Initially, he thought it couldn’t possibly be some kind of scheme for him to earn money. However, even at the end of the episode, he might not have been completely convinced. Additionally, there could have been an element of surprise, such as “I’ve never heard Luke sound this sincere about something like this before.” That pretty much sums up what was going through his mind.
In the world of OBX, fans are well aware that Luke is a difficult character to like, and JJ finds it challenging to accept his father’s news about him. However, Weeks’ portrayal accurately reflects the truth, and he repeatedly reassures his son of this fact during their conversation on top of a lighthouse.
It’s apparent that both JJ and Luke were taken aback by this disclosure, and the performers portraying them shared the same sentiment. Delving further into the crafting of this scene, Pankow mentioned that their own responses, as well as the feelings of their on-screen father towards the scene, influenced their actions during it.
When I was discussing this matter with Gary, we were both taken aback to discover they had chosen that particular path, eliciting a mutual response of ‘Wow…’ However, in retrospect, I believe it effectively advanced the scene. We also shared a sentiment, saying something along the lines of, ‘Just so you know, you’re not biologically my son,’ which I feel added depth to the scene.
It 100% played in the scene, and it was an epic note to end Part 1 on.
Instead of being concerned about JJ and Kiara’s relationship, what has become more troubling is the discovery that Pogue has an entire family he was unaware of. This revelation not only seems bizarre on a personal level, but it also introduces a fresh layer of complexity to the treasure hunt that the characters are engaged in this season.
We’re in luck! The wait for seeing the outcome of these events won’t be prolonged as the last five episodes of Season 4 are set to release on November 7. When OBX Season 4, Part 2 resumes, I can’t wait to find out how JJ will deal with this revelation and what the Pogues will do when they hear it.
Man, I can’t help but feel that the latest twist is about to shake up Rudy Pankow’s character like never before. This season’s second half is shaping up to be one heck of a rollercoaster ride!
