As a long-time supporter and admirer of the Nike Doernbecher Children’s Hospital collaboration, I can’t help but feel a lump in my throat whenever I see these incredible designs that come out of this heartwarming partnership. With each new collection, I am reminded of the strength, resilience, and creativity of these young patient-designers, who despite their own battles, manage to inspire us all with their unique perspectives on life and style.
For two decades, Nike and Oregon Health & Science University’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital have collaborated on a unique program, where patients are invited to team up with Nike volunteers to create custom sneaker designs. This heartwarming initiative has garnered over $40 million USD so far and showcased 122 patient designers. Last month, they unveiled their 20th collection, which set a new sales record of $77,500 USD for Connor Kassing Fernández’s Air Max DN design.
Continuing their program, the pair not only conducted a unique auction for an Air Jordan 20 “Doernbecher Freestyle,” but have also started a silent auction showcasing more than 50 sneakers spanning two decades. Some popular sneakers featured are the LeBron 13 by Kian Safholm (as shown earlier), the Air Jordan 15 by Donovon Dinneen, and last year’s Zoom Vomero 5 by Jaren Heacock. Also available for purchase is a special Doernbecher Freestyle 20th Anniversary T-Shirt, which was part of the previous Air Jordan 20 auction, priced at $40 USD in limited numbers without a bidding process.
The silent auction is open now via Classy and will run until Monday, November 18 at 1pm EST. Note that items have reserve values, shipping and handling fees, as well as buy it now prices.
