Overwatch 2 Brings Back the Controversial GOATS Meta

Overwatch 2 is revisiting one of its most debated times: the GOATS meta.

In the current Overwatch: Classic event, Blizzard has reintroduced the popular team setup that was prevalent in 2018 and 2019.

Once again, I find myself using a term that seems to stir emotions. This phrase, known as GOATS (an acronym originating from the team who made it famous), represents a team composition with three defensive stalwarts serving as tanks, and another trio of heroes playing support roles.

It excelled through endurance, stringing together combinations, and maintaining its momentum. It wasn’t flashy, but it consistently delivered results – a bit excessively so, to be honest.

In its prime, GOATS strategy made matches drag on like prolonged fights, with individual hero abilities having minimal impact unless one team was able to accumulate ultimate abilities faster and endure longer than the opposition.

Initially, the imbalance became too severe, prompting Blizzard to introduce Role Queue as a solution. However, in Season 15, this issue seems to have resurfaced, albeit temporarily.

In the most recent version of Overwatch: Classic, the spotlight is on the GOATS metagame, lasting from March 25 to April 7. Competitors will have another chance to engage in 6v6 skirmishes on classic maps such as Rialto, Busan, and Blizzard World.

Blizzard has adjusted the balance of heroes back to their 2018 settings, but with some contemporary tweaks. Newer characters such as Ashe, Moira, Brigitte, and Wrecking Ball have been introduced to give the roster a fresher feel.

This occasion offers in-game competitions featuring aesthetic prizes. If you’ve been yearning to revisit the original Overwatch or simply want to know its feel, now’s your opportunity to dive back in!

Some people still have reservations about it. Detractors argue that it was never an enjoyable gameplay style to start with. It favored aggressive playstyles over strategic ones, while penalizing innovative approaches. At that time, trading first often resulted in losing first, and damage per second (DPS) players were frequently sidelined from the equation altogether.

Some gamers worry that, due to the influence of the “GOATS” period causing viewer burnout and strategy repetition, a resurrection might reintroduce these issues, temporarily at least. However, Blizzard has introduced potential solutions.

As a gamer, I’ve got some good news! Until April 22, I can still dive into the competitive 6v6 modes without worrying about being labeled a ‘GOAT’. However, there’s one thing to keep in mind: no stacking full tank teams for now. Let’s keep the game balanced and fair for everyone!

Anyone wanting the old format without GOATS dominance can still go for it.
