- A mobile port of Blizzard’s hot hero-shooter Overwatch was in development

- But any news on whether it’s still in the works is thin on the ground
As a long-time fan of Overwatch, I can’t help but get excited when I hear about potential new ways to play my favorite hero shooter. However, I must admit that I’ve learned to take rumors with a grain of salt after years of waiting for various game ports and expansions that never quite materialized.
As an avid fan, I couldn’t help but get excited when I learned that Blizzard’s thrilling hero shooter Overwatch is finally making its way to mobile devices! This intriguing news comes from Jason Schreier’s latest book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainment.
Additionally, Schreier shared that a mobile adaptation of Overwatch, a well-known hero shooter launched in 2016, was once under development. Contrary to some rumors, there’s no clear evidence suggesting the project is still being worked on, if it advanced beyond initial stages.
In various sources, it’s often stated that Walter Kong, at the helm, managed the continuous rollout of characters and content for Overwatch 2, in addition to introducing spin-offs such as a mobile adaptation of the game.
Overlooked
It seems that Overwatch Mobile hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, as we haven’t received a clear answer from Blizzard themselves. While Jason Schreier doesn’t shy away from revealing Blizzard’s internal issues, it’s important to note that there’s a significant distinction between behind-the-scenes turmoil and ongoing projects in legal terms. If Overwatch Mobile were still being developed, I believe Schreier would have mentioned it in his book.
Still, the excitement behind this passage certainly shows there’s a hankering for the hero shooter to come to mobile. And with Walter Kong only taking over the general management position in 2021, this certainly isn’t ancient history that’s easy to dismiss.
