Paddington 4 & a TV Series Spinoff Are Officially On The Way

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news about the upcoming Paddington projects has me absolutely “bear-ing” excited! Having grown up with the beloved bear from darkest Peru, it is truly heartwarming to see his story continue to evolve and captivate audiences across various formats.

Fans of Paddington Bear can celebrate, as new projects from the film series have been announced! StudioCanal has confirmed that a sequel, tentatively called “Paddington 4,” and a television spinoff are currently being developed. This lovable bear character was created by Michael Bond and first appeared in 1958, delighting audiences through books, animated shows, and popular movies. In 2014, the film “Paddington” introduced Ben Whishaw as our beloved bear, a role he reprised in the critically acclaimed “Paddington 2,” which was one of the highest-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes. The next chapter in the Paddington saga, “Paddington in Peru,” is eagerly awaited by fans.

At Brand Licensing Europe 2024 in London, Françoise Guyonnet, CEO of StudioCanal Kids and Family Brands, and Sissel Henno, Head of Global Sales, presented the company’s panel discussing the future of the Paddington franchise. They revealed plans for both a fourth movie titled “Paddington 4” and a television series, aiming for release in 2027 and 2028 respectively. The television series launch coincides with the 70th anniversary of Paddington’s first appearance in 1958. Additionally, it was confirmed that “Paddington: The Musical” will premiere on London’s West End towards the end of 2025.

Welcome to the Paddington Cinematic Universe

Since the debut of 2014’s movie “Paddington”, the franchise has skyrocketed in fame. Following the premiere of “Paddington 2” and the upcoming “Paddington in Peru”, an animated series called “The Adventures of Paddington” aired on Nick Jr., with Ben Whishaw reprising his role. It remains unclear if StudioCanal’s forthcoming “Paddington” series will feature another animated escapade or a live-action television program. With three movies, an animated series, and now plans for a fourth film and fresh TV show, they are building a robust brand that offers a narrative suitable for children and families to enjoy across various mediums.

In the upcoming third installment, titled “Paddington in Peru“, audiences will find our beloved bear character continuing his adventures. This movie is set ten years after the original and takes Paddington and the Brown family on a journey to meet Aunt Lucy in Peru. With some changes behind the scenes, Paul King, who directed the first two films, has moved on to direct Wonka, while Douglas Wilson assumes directorial duties for this new adventure. Mary Brown, previously played by Sally Hawkins, will now be portrayed by Emily Mortimer. Contrary to what some might have thought, it seems that this film is not the conclusion of a trilogy but rather a sign that the Paddington franchise has more stories left to tell.

Paddington in Peru
opens in the UK on November 8, 2024, and in North America on January 17, 2025.
