Panned Movie ‘Culpa Mia (My Fault)’ Joins ‘Culpa Tuya (Your Fault)’ at the Top of Streaming Chart

Despite receiving heavy criticism, an infamous movie from Prime Video’s history has climbed its way back up the charts following the release of its controversial sequel in December 2023. The original movie had a dismal 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the release of the sequel titled “Culpa Tuya (Your Fault)” appears to have breathed new life into it, placing it among the top three most-watched titles on Prime Video’s global chart.

Despite an abundance of films available for viewers, including critically acclaimed releases like Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” and Anne Hathaway’s “The Idea of You”, the unexpected hit has once again bucked its numerous poor reviews to outperform them all. The Spanish-language romantic drama franchise appears to be a modern example of a story that went viral, expanding from a series of books, to a series of films, with a thin narrative. Despite attracting large audiences, the critical response has been exceptionally harsh.

The title “Culpa Mia” narrates the tale of Noah, a young woman who experiences an unexpected romantic attraction towards her stepbrother after her mother remarries. Notably, this film, along with its sequel and the third book in the series, can be encapsulated by that one sentence. Critics, predictably, dislike both movies. However, audience reactions are a bit more nuanced.

Why Do Critics Hate Culpa Mia so Much?

From what you’d anticipate with a viral phenomenon like Culpa Mia, certain basic aspects have been seized upon by audiences that might make for engaging reading, but may not be as effective on screen. Out of the 13 reviews both films have in common (quite unfortunate indeed), only one offers a somewhat positive suggestion. The general consensus is clear, as it mentions the film’s poor acting, lack of storyline, and an overwhelming number of clichés that blend together, making it challenging to distinguish one from another.

Audience members seem to be quite fond of the movie, with The Popcornmeter showing an impressive 86%. It seems that the film successfully met the expectations of those who have read the books. Given that most critics are familiar with Ron’s original tale and its subsequent novels, it’s understandable why Prime Video decided to produce the two sequels needed to tell the complete story.

The sequel to “Your Fault” has continued its streak of popularity on Prime Video. Since its debut, it’s held the number one spot in the charts and even sparked renewed curiosity about the original. Unfortunately, the new film hasn’t resonated as strongly with viewers as expected. Critics have been particularly harsh, labeling it as “painful,” “stupid,” and most notably, “an insult to the book series.” Despite numerous critics declaring they won’t watch the third installment, it’s a safe bet that when “Our Fault” (Out Fault) hits Prime Video next year, all three movies will effortlessly push aside more deserving content.
