Paramount Snags Fall’s Hottest Sales Title ‘September 5,’ Shaking Up Oscar Race (Exclusive)

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for historical dramas and a knack for spotting Oscar-worthy contenders, I am beyond thrilled about Paramount Pictures acquiring the global distribution rights for “September 5”. Having witnessed its premiere at prestigious festivals like Venice and Telluride, I can confidently say that this film is poised to make waves in the industry.

On September 5th, the highly anticipated film that caused a stir at this year’s autumn film festivals, which is widely considered a strong contender for various awards, was acquired by Paramount Pictures, according to an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter.

The production company has acquired global distribution rights for the movie, except in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria where Constantin Film will manage it. Starting November 27, which is a Wednesday during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the film will be released in U.S. cinemas. The plan is to extend its screen presence into December and intensify its theatrical release with a strong awards campaign.

In this third film directed by Tim Fehlbaum (known for “The Colony” and “Hell”), Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, and Leonie Benesch take on the leading roles. The movie is a gripping drama centered around ABC Sports’ coverage of the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis, where Palestinian militants captured Israeli athletes. This incident marked the first live-broadcasted event of terrorism, causing numerous moral and ethical quandaries for the journalists present, such as the legendary head of ABC Sports, Roone Arledge (portrayed by Sarsgaard), the young producer in charge of Olympics coverage, Geoff Mason (played by Magaro), and a German national who assisted them with language and cultural navigation (Benesch).

In July, Republic Pictures under Paramount took up the worldwide distribution rights for a film titled “September 5“. Since then, they’ve been actively seeking U.S. distributors. The interest among these potential partners peaked significantly after the movie made its debut at both the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals, where it created quite a stir, being compared to previous Best Picture Oscar winners like “Argo” and “Spotlight“. Eventually, Paramount Film Group decided that this was a project they wanted to keep within their own circle. Now, it becomes part of the studio’s impressive collection of potential award-winning films alongside titles such as “Gladiator 2“, “Better Man“, and “Transformers One“.

On September 5th, The Hollywood Reporter characterized the film as both enlightening and captivating, praising its exceptional cast. It’s not just a nostalgic look at how news was managed in the pre-digital era; it also resonates with our current times, offering insights that are relevant today.
