Parasite Streaming Soon: You Won’t Believe Where!

2020 saw Bong Joon-ho’s groundbreaking film “Parasite” create a stir when it was awarded the Best Picture Oscar, along with three additional accolades that evening. Upon its release in theaters, this modern masterpiece garnered near-universal acclaim, boasting a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes and solidifying Bong Joon-ho’s status as one of South Korea’s top directors. Movie enthusiasts continue to rave about the gripping psychological thriller on platforms like Letterboxd, and fans eagerly await a chance to revisit “Parasite” this summer, as it has secured a new streaming platform for easy viewing.

Starting June 1, the critically acclaimed film “Parasite” will resume streaming on Max (formerly HBO Max). Co-written by Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won, this masterpiece won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The movie boasts a talented South Korean cast, including Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-sik, and Park So-dam. The film’s success opened doors for Joon-ho, leading to his 2025 project, “Mickey 17”. Although not as warmly received by critics, “Mickey 17” (starring Robert Pattinson) still garnered a positive response from fans.

Parasite is a raw examination and portrayal of social class divisions and prejudice. The story revolves around the struggling Kim family, who seize an opportunity when their son secures a tutoring position for the affluent Park family’s child. Leveraging this connection, the rest of the Kims attempt to insinuate themselves into various roles within the Park household, taking advantage of them merely to stay afloat. The movie delves deeply into these heavy and at times violent themes, but also incorporates Bong Joon-ho’s sharp, dark wit, injecting the film with some awkwardly amusing scenes that provide relief from the tense atmosphere.

What Is Bong Joon-ho’s Next Movie?

Bong Joon-ho has consistently switched between genres and languages throughout his filmmaking journey. His Korean-language suspense films are particularly admired by fans, with the movies “Parasite,” “Memories of Murder,” and “Mother” being standouts. However, it’s not just thrillers that catch Joon-ho’s interest; he has also dabbled in dystopian sci-fi, as demonstrated by his direction of the 2013 film “Snowpiercer,” starring Chris Evans, and more recently, “Mickey 17.

Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming venture represents another unexpected move for the filmmaker, as he embarks on an animation project titled “The Valley.” Interestingly, only one actor, the unconventional cult figure Werner Herzog, has been associated with the film thus far. The collaboration between Joon-ho and Herzog seems fitting now that it’s been announced. As of recent updates, production on “The Valley” is reportedly halfway completed. Given its animated nature, the project will inevitably require more time than Joon-ho’s live-action films. A tentative release date for 2027 has been suggested, though this remains unofficial at present.
