‘Parthenope’ Trailer: Sun, Sea and Sex Feature in Paolo Sorrentino’s Love Letter to Naples

As a seasoned gamer with an extensive background in navigating the labyrinthine world of cinematic art, I must admit that the trailer for Parthenope has piqued my curiosity. The visual spectacle presented is undeniably captivating, with its vibrant hues and intriguing compositions reminiscent of a Fellini dreamscape. However, as someone who’s often found himself navigating the narrative depths of games like Dark Souls, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed when a film leans too heavily on visual flair at the expense of substance.

It’s not surprising that A24, understanding the power of sensuality in selling, has filled the initial U.S. trailer for Parthenope with elements of allure.

Newcomer Celeste Dalla Porta portrays Parthenope in different states of dress, from emerging wet from the sea in a bikini to adorned with religious jewelry that leaves little to the imagination, entangled with co-stars Dario Aita and Daniele Rienzo in scenes reminiscent of pre-threesome interactions.

The scene is filled with sun, sea, and sensuality. A single remark from Gary Oldman, portraying a tipsy John Cheever, hints at shadows hidden beneath when he says to Parthenope, “Have you considered the damage your beauty inflicts?

The movie is essentially Paolo Sorrentino’s heartfelt tribute to Naples, a sequel to his 2021 release “The Hand of God” – it’s Naples that captivates him in a way that’s hard to resist and explain. On-screen, the city is portrayed as a mesmerizing, alluring beauty, thanks to the stunning cinematography by Daria D’Antonio, who also worked on “Hand of God“. The costumes, designed by Anthony Vaccarello, one of the film’s producers, add to this captivating presentation.

In advance of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival’s competition section in May, rights for the movie titled “Parthenope” were obtained by A24. This film received a mixed review from The Hollywood Reporter, with appreciation for Sorrentino’s lavish aesthetics but criticism regarding its shallow narrative. The critique pointed out that Sorrentino’s penchant for grandiose visuals sometimes leads him to overindulge his less refined impulses, resembling a false Fellini at times…[The film’s] eye-catching effects are employed to divert attention, much like shiny trinkets.

As of now, the release date within the country for the movie “Pathenope” remains undecided. Its strategy to be a potential awards season competitor was affected when Italy overlooked Oscar-winning Sorrentino and opted instead for Maura Delpero’s Venice Silver Lion winner, “Vermiglio”, as their entry for the best international feature film category.
