Patapon on Nintendo Switch Rekindles Nostalgic Memories of the PlayStation Portable

Today’s Nintendo Direct wasn’t overflowing with content, but it did offer a glimpse into upcoming titles like Pokemon Z-A and Metroid Prime Beyond. What really grabbed my attention was how Nintendo’s hybrid console is evoking memories of my nostalgic portable gaming era with Sony’s PlayStation Portable – and that’s due to the announcement of Patapon coming to the Nintendo Switch.

It was an utterly unanticipated delight to find that Patapon, initially exclusive to PlayStation and developed by Japan Studio (now closed), is now playable on the Switch. The suddenness reminded me of Super Mario Bros. Wonder appearing on the PlayStation 5 – a crossover I never thought would happen so swiftly. Yet, here it is, and it feels just right.

Nostalgia Is One Hell of a Drug

Up until now, Patapon games could only be played on PlayStation consoles. However, while the first two games have been remastered, Patapon 3 has not – at least, not as of yet. But with this upcoming release, all the original Patapon games will be collected together for the first time. Patapon 1+2 Replay is set to launch on various platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. This presents a great chance for newcomers to dive into the enchanting world of this rhythmic strategy game.

Playing that game on a handheld device such as the Nintendo Switch is sure to stir up some strong feelings of nostalgia for me.

Most PlayStation Portable Games Are Now on Nintendo Switch

Among the great aspects of the Nintendo Switch is that several games I held dear during my PlayStation Portable era have migrated to Nintendo’s hybrid console, and it’s likely they’ll appear on the upcoming Switch 2 too. Games like Persona 3 Portable, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and timeless JRPGs such as Ys and Star Ocean are already available. What makes this even more exciting is that these games have been updated for contemporary players, offering enhanced controls and increased accessibility.

Reading about Patapon’s updates rekindled my desire to grab my Switch once more and immerse myself back into Patapon 1 and 2, as I did years ago – spending countless hours playing, often even before school in the morning. With Nintendo’s portable ecosystem flourishing today, I have the chance to recapture that enchantment all over again.

The Future of PSP Games for Nintendo Switch

This year, there’s a strong possibility that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released. If that happens, we might see some beloved PlayStation Portable games like God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta being adapted for the Switch 2. Additionally, Gravity Rush, which is compatible with gyro controls, could potentially become available on the new Nintendo console as well.

At the moment, all I have is anticipation for the upcoming launch of Patapon 1+2, scheduled for July 11th. Once it’s released, I’ll be able to rekindle the nostalgia from my PlayStation Portable days, effectively transforming my Nintendo Switch into a modern successor to my malfunctioning PSP.
