Pathaan's Besharam Rang singer Shilpa Rao opens up on ban calls around the song; 'We wanted people to get...'

As a music enthusiast who has been following the Indian film industry for decades, I must say that the resilience and composure displayed by Shilpa Rao during the Besharam Rang controversy was truly inspiring. Her focus on the song’s message of empowerment and celebration, despite the threats and demands for its ban, speaks volumes about her dedication to her craft.

2023 saw Pathaan as one of the most awaited films, marking Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback to the silver screen after a gap of four years. Yet, before its premiere, the song Besharam Rang featuring Deepika Padukone and SRK stirred up quite a storm. In recent discussions, the song’s vocalist, Shilpa Rao, shared her thoughts, stating that she and the team remained composed amidst the turmoil. Their aim was for people to appreciate and connect with the song in their unique manner. Consequently, they chose not to worry excessively about the threats.

In a daringly colored swimsuit lineup, Deepika Padukone and SRK danced on the beach in “Besheram Rang.” The orange bikini sparked controversy among conservative groups, leading to threats towards the crew and calls for the song’s prohibition. The tension only grew as a result.

During a recent chat with The Lallantop, Shilpa Rao, their singer, was inquired about her perspective amidst the ongoing controversy. In her reply, she simply stated, “We were all aware of it.” She clarified that she and her team didn’t dwell too much on it but rather paid attention to the public’s reactions instead.

Rao pointed out that contrary to the disputes, this is a captivating song intended to inspire people. Therefore, they aimed for people to appreciate it in their unique fashion.

She expressed, “What mattered most was for people to connect with the song on their own terms. The goal was for the song to inspire and uplift them. That’s what we aimed for – for them to grasp its empowering message and feel its celebration of them. This is why we allowed it to stand as it is, so they could comprehend and internalize it.

In spite of the warnings and requests, no measures were implemented against the creators. The film Pathaan was a huge hit at the cinema, and the song accumulated an astounding 677 million views on YouTube, demonstrating its popularity.

Shilpa Rao first ventured into formal music during her college years, when Mithun Sharma, a renowned composer and singer, invited her to record the song “Tose Naina” from Anwar. Since then, she has provided vocals for numerous hits such as ‘Chaleya,’ ‘Tere Hawale,’ ‘Malang,’ ‘Bulleya,’ ‘Khuda Jaane,’ ‘Subhanallah’ and many others.
