Patrick Dempsey in Talks To Return for Scream 7 After 24 Years Away

As a seasoned cinephile who has seen more slasher films than I care to remember, the news of Patrick Dempsey potentially returning to the Scream franchise is music to my horror-loving ears! Ever since his charismatic portrayal of Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3, I’ve been eagerly awaiting his return. The thought of seeing Sidney Prescott and her husband reunite on the big screen once again would be a delightful nod to the franchise’s rich history.

It seemed like the seventh installment in the Scream series had a bumpy beginning due to several obstacles, but it now seems to be moving forward smoothly again. If everything goes according to plan, we might even see another beloved character reappear in the upcoming sequel. Previously, Christopher Landon of Happy Death Day fame was slated to direct the sequel, but he left the project late in 2023 after the dismissal of Melissa Barrera and the departure of Jenna Ortega shortly afterward. However, original Scream writer Kevin Williamson has now taken over the reins, with the film set to be released on February 27, 2026.

It appears that Patrick Dempsey could potentially join Neve Campbell in the upcoming “Scream 7”, as talks of his possible appearance have emerged. Known for his role on “Grey’s Anatomy”, Dempsey last appeared in the “Scream” franchise in “Scream 3”. He portrayed Detective Mark Kincaid, who was later revealed to be Sidney Prescott’s husband in the 2022 reboot. However, by the time we reached “Scream 6”, he was said to be in hiding. In a recent interview on Today (see link below), Dempsey hinted at his role in the latest sequel without giving too much away, but did confirm that there have been conversations about his potential return.

I’m still awaiting the script. There’s been a discussion about it. As of now, I haven’t received anything, so time will tell how things unfold. However, Neve was on the same show as me; she portrayed my sister in Grey’s Anatomy. We worked together approximately 26-27 years ago. That was around ’98 or ’99.

What Is Scream 7 About?

Since the production of Scream 7 is still in its initial stages and no official filming date has been announced yet, the storyline remains unclear at this point. However, Neve Campbell has revealed that she’s coming back because the next movie will center around Sidney. While we now know that Sidney will be the main character, it’s still uncertain where this installment fits within the broader story arc of the franchise.

So far, none of the characters from the series have taken Campbell’s role, as Courtney Cox shared a month ago that she hasn’t agreed to reappear yet. If she doesn’t appear in the upcoming movie, it would be the first film in the franchise without her character Gale Weathers. Similarly, David Arquette’s character Dewey Riley was killed off in the 2022 reboot, which upset many fans. However, just like Cox, Arquette’s character has been central to the series, so the creator could find a way to bring him back by either setting the next movie before his death or by coming up with an ingenious explanation for why he’s not truly deceased.

Regardless of the route taken, it’s heartening to observe progress in the Scream saga, following a challenging year in 2023. Here’s hoping this momentum continues and viewers won’t experience any further setbacks that could potentially postpone the film again. Crossing our fingers, as Kevin Williamson resumes his role as primary creator for Scream 7, there’s a strong possibility it might become one of the series’ most impressive installments to date.
