Patrick J. Adams on ‘Suits’ Exit: “I Was Miserable and Drinking Too Much”

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for storytelling and character development, I can’t help but relate to Patrick J. Adams‘ journey on Suits and beyond. His struggle with depression and alcohol is something that many artists, including myself, can unfortunately identify with. The pressure of performance, the fear of failure, and the desire to escape from it all – these are feelings that we often hide beneath our avatars in the gaming world.

Patrick J. Adams says his relationship with alcohol impacted his final season on Suits.

The actor who previously played the lead in “Suits” admits he battled depression and excessive drinking during the series’ seventh season, coinciding with his character, Mike Ross, being written off the show with a completed narrative.

Adams confided on the latest episode of the ‘Dinner’s On Me’ podcast that during season seven, he wasn’t attending well to his mental health and excessively consumed alcohol. He was living an unreflective life at the time, feeling quite unhappy, and he would describe himself as being quite depressed. Without the ability to manage this depression effectively, he resorted to spending a lot of money, drinking too much, and didn’t know how to discuss his feelings.

He mentioned, “I’d resort to self-numbing [to cope with] my insecurities and fears.” However, this wasn’t effective, and it negatively impacted both his relationship and his role as a father. A turning point came when he realized, “I might need to quit drinking because I don’t want to be that kind of dad.” The most beneficial decision he made for himself was quitting alcohol. This change was crucial for other positive developments in his life to occur.

Adams stated that the sole motivator to remain was financial gain, as he wasn’t sure of any other incentive. Occasionally, he finds himself contemplating the earnings of Gabriel Macht from his last two years in Suits, but he’s never once second-guessed his choice. It was the proper course for my marriage… it was past due.

Adams is co-hosting a podcast titled “Sidebar: A Suits Rewatch” with his previous co-star, Sarah Rafferty. This podcast is ongoing during the final season of Adams. Last year, the former USA Network show garnered a total of 57.7 billion minutes on Netflix.

At first, Adams found it challenging to wrap his head around the resurgence of the show’s popularity when he spoke with The Hollywood Reporter earlier.

Initially, he admitted he had a skeptical attitude, questioning the potential benefits for him. He felt like, “Why should this matter to me now? With Suits behind me, how will this impact my career?” As it gained popularity, his concern shifted from being ignored to realizing that it wouldn’t be overlooked anymore. Despite not watching it at first due to self-consciousness and insecurity, he is ready to move past those feelings now. The best years of his life were spent on that show, but there were also challenging days, which he prefers to leave in the past.

Reflecting on his performance today, Adams shares, “Now, I’m overflowing with self-empathy… I find myself being more understanding and acknowledging what a fantastic team we were. When you’re immersed in something, you rarely have the chance to truly appreciate it, to pause and think, ‘Wow, isn’t this great?’ or, at least, that wasn’t my experience as a young person, as I was so focused on getting it right, excelling, and making the most of every opportunity. It’s challenging to do so when you’re under pressure and stressed. However, watching the show now allows me to bask in that appreciation. It enables me to truly grasp how unique this experience was.
