Patti LuPone: Trump’s Kennedy Center ‘Should Get Blown Up’

In simpler terms, Robert De Niro represents the anti-Trump movement in Hollywood, while Patti LuPone embodies that same resistance on Broadway.

Although the renowned stage actress may not receive as much media coverage as Robert De Niro, her sharp wit is equally formidable.

Though the celebrated stage actress might not be in the spotlight as frequently as Robert De Niro, her biting sarcasm is no less powerful.

Read about a captivating New Yorker feature profile on the star’s vibrant journey through life. This article portrays her as a gifted artist and influential figure, a genuine embodiment of the city who had to battle tirelessly for all that she achieved.

Fame. Money. You name it.

This feature enables her to express strong disagreement towards President Donald Trump’s recent involvement with The Kennedy Center. To his supporters, this historic DC establishment seemed to prioritize drag shows over everyday Americans like Joe and Jane Sixpack. Trump then assumed a position on the center’s board and appointed Richard Grenell as its president.

In response to something that angered her, LuPone chose to mimic Madonna’s tactic from her book of resistance. Notably, Madonna had once expressed a desire (albeit metaphorically) to destroy the White House following Trump’s 2016 election win. However, Madonna later distanced herself from those remarks without facing any significant professional consequences.

The same will likely hold for LuPone.

She’s particularly frustrated with the rest of the nation and has expressed strong feelings about it. On multiple occasions, she mentioned to me that the Kennedy Center, following its Trumpification, is something that should be destroyed. In her car, during a discussion about the current administration, she exclaimed, “Leave New York alone. Let it become its own country.” She emphasized, “Isn’t there any other city in America as diverse, as bold? It’s a city where you either thrive or perish. Stand strong or depart.

During the interview, LuPone showed understanding for another Broadway icon who doesn’t share her political perspectives. Notably, playwright David Mamet shifted towards conservatism in his later years, as demonstrated in his controversial 2008 essay for The Village Voice titled “Why I Am No Longer a ‘Thoughtless Liberal.

LuPone worked with Mamet earlier in their careers and fell in love with his signature dialogue.

After grasping its flow, speaking the text felt effortless to me,” she stated. “My acting skills improved more under David Mamet’s guidance than during my four years at Juilliard.” Remarkably, despite their contrasting political views – with Mamet adopting the MAGA stance – their creative partnership has remained robust.

Previously, LuPone expressed strong criticism towards Christian conservatives, likening them to groups such as Al-Qaeda in 2018. She also harshly criticized “older white men” and made allegations about Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sexual orientation, suggesting he was hiding his homosexuality.

More recently, LuPone wondered if the United States would survive a second Trump term.
