Paul Mescal To Star in New Ridley Scott Thriller The Dog Stars

As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the collaboration between Paul Mescal and Ridley Scott is a match made in cinematic heaven. The young Irishman’s electrifying performance in “Gladiator II” has left audiences on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating his next big role.

Before audiences have a chance to see Paul Mescal’s acting in “Gladiator II”, Ridley Scott is already collaborating with this rising talent on a new venture. In the sequel, Mescal portrays Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielson) and Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), who escaped Rome and harbored intense animosity towards the Roman military. After being enslaved, Lucius is compelled to fight in the same Colosseum as his father once did, providing amusement for the people of Rome at the capricious will of the tyrannical Emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracala (Fred Hechinger).

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight to publicize “Gladiator II”, Paul Mescal inadvertently revealed that he and Ridley Scott have already commenced work on their next project together. This information has since been confirmed by Variety, who report that Mescal will be starring in Scott’s upcoming film, although it is not yet “Gladiator III”. The film is titled “The Dog Stars” and centers around an apocalyptic thriller set after a pandemic has decimated the population. Mark L. Smith, known for his work on “The Revenant”, wrote the script based on Peter Heller’s novel of the same name. According to Variety, this is the plot summary:

The film follows a civilian pilot lives a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a tough ex-marine, in a near future where an unnamed pandemic has decimated American society. The two men couldn’t be more mismatched but depend on each other to fend off roaming invaders. When a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside the pilot that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, discussing my role in the upcoming sequel to “Gladiator II” with Ridley Scott, I hinted at a few movies that could have potentially inspired our future project. I mentioned, “Ridley is always keeping an eye out for great cinema,” and went on to say, “We’ve been discussing a film we hope to create someday, and when I brought up references, I spoke to him on a Monday and by Wednesday, he had already watched the two films I recommended.

Ridley Scott Wants to Make Many More Gladiator Movies

As Paul Mescal gears up for his upcoming film with Ridley Scott, it’s worth noting that the director has several more projects in the works. Intriguingly, Scott expressed a desire to direct Gladiator III one day (fingers crossed, no 24-year wait). However, he doesn’t plan to stop at just one sequel. “I believe there will definitely be a third one,” Scott hinted, reaffirming his earlier statements. But then, the journalist and fans were taken aback when Scott casually mentioned:

“Well, there may be more!”

After the premiere of “Gladiator II” in theaters towards the end of this month, viewers will get a clearer sense of what direction a third “Gladiator” movie might take. Many anticipate that Lucius will perish at the conclusion of the second film, much like Maximus did in the first “Gladiator”. Yet, such an ending could also be too predictable, and replicating the original plot twist may diminish the urgency for creating a sequel.

Paul Mescal expressed his enthusiasm for potentially reprising his role in a third or even fourth installment of the film “Gladiator.” Refraining from disclosing details about “Gladiator II,” Mescal shared, “Regardless of what this character intends, I’m ready. Ready. Ready.” Joining an illustrious ensemble for “Gladiator II” are Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Derek Jacobi, Rory McCann, Matt Lucas, and others. The early reviews of “Gladiator II” suggest a sequel that surpasses expectations, boasting outstanding performances from Washington, Mescal, and Pascal.
