PBS’ ‘Masterpiece’ Books ‘Maigret’ Mystery Series

As a lifelong fanatic of detective series, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming PBS adaptation of Maigret, starring Benjamin Wainwright! Having grown up with Georges Simenon’s novels and following various adaptations over the years, I can only imagine what it must be like to witness this iconic character breathe life anew.

A new iteration of one of the most beloved detectives in fiction is coming to PBS.

The state-run TV network is producing a show called “Maigret,” modeled after Georges Simenon’s books about Jules Maigret, a prominent detective in the Paris police force. Filming for this series, featuring Benjamin Wainwright as the lead character, has already started in Budapest. When it’s ready, you’ll be able to watch it on PBS under their “Masterpiece Mystery!” label.

Georges Simenon authored over a hundred novels and short stories featuring Maigret, a detective series that sold more books than any other except Sherlock Holmes. The upcoming Maigret series, produced by Playground (known for creating shows like Wolf Hall and All Creatures Great and Small), is set in the modern day. This new version of Maigret will portray him as a youthful detective with much to prove, a promising figure within the Police Judiciaire who is tenacious in his investigations, able to penetrate the minds of criminals he pursues and possessing an exceptional understanding of Paris and its people.

The author of ‘Homeland’ and ‘The Tower’, Patrick Harbinson, is transforming Simenon’s books into a new project. He will be the main scriptwriter and executive producer for this adaptation. International distribution rights are managed by Banijay Rights.

George Simenon’s character, Jules Maigret, is deeply rooted among the elite literary detectives, and we are deeply appreciative of our collaborators Masterpiece, Banijay, ILP, and John Simenon for their faith in us as we strive to introduce a modern-day Maigret to an international audience,” expressed David Stern, co-managing director at Playground. “Patrick Harbinson’s innovative approach to this timeless intellectual property exemplifies Playground’s aim to broaden our collection of contemporary series that resonate with global viewers.

Susanne Simpson, head of scripted content and executive producer for Masterpiece, stated that ‘Maigret’ will fit seamlessly into the lineup of Mystery! shows on Masterpiece. Our collaborators at Playground have brought together an exceptional ensemble cast and creative team, and viewers are sure to appreciate Inspector Maigret and his distinctive approach to solving crimes,” reads one way to paraphrase the given statement in a natural and easy-to-understand manner.

As a gamer, I’m excited to join forces with the talented cast of “Belgravia: The Next Chapter” – Stefanie Martini, Blake Harrison, Reda Elazouar, Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok, Rob Kazinsky, and Nathalie Armin. Together, we’re set to embark on an unforgettable adventure!

George Simenon’s novels have been translated into various films and television shows globally. For instance, one of his works was featured in the pioneering series Studio One during the 1950s. Additionally, a 1992-93 ITV production, titled “Mystery!”, starring Michael Gambon, also showcased one of Simenon’s stories.

Harbinson takes charge of the first two episodes in this new series, while Faye Gilbert and David Evans each oversee two episodes as well. Harbinson serves as executive producer for Windhover Films, joined by Colin Callender and Stern from Playground, along with Simpson and John Simenon representing Masterpiece’ and Georges Simenon Limited.
